It's part of the whole "balanced calendar," which is bullshit-speak for year-round school. We get "eight" weeks in the summer, four nine week quarters, and two weeks each between quarters (fall break, spring break, winter holidays). Of course, teachers don't get as much time off as students. It adds up to less than the old calendar. I liked the old calendar. Plus, there's not summer school anymore - now, kids have to make up failed classes after school during the year.
I would rather return to ten-week summers with shorter breaks during school. It's not like you can get a second job for the ways they've broken it up, now, nor can parents get daycare for the weird breaks.
