At the start of the year, I set a new writing goal for myself, in an attempt to encourage myself to write at least a little bit each week. I wanted to ease back into it, since the last thing I had written was for a five year old, so I thought I'd start with a little drabble.
This is the first thing I wrote for the year 2012. I thought it appropriate that it be the first thing I post as well. I enjoy thinking about Castiel becoming human and in this case, it was interesting to explore a little bit how the Winchesters feel about it.
Gen, Altered-Reality, Angel-Turned-Human, Angst, Hurt/Comfort with Dean, Castiel & Sam. Rated PG and 571 words. Summary: Cas sleeps now and Dean is struck by what that means.

Author's Notes: At the start of 2012, I decided to try to write 500 words a week, not an unobtainable goal. But the last thing I had written in 2011 was an X-Men fic for a 5 year old, so I thought maybe I needed to ease back into it before going back to my threesome fic I was working on. I don’t know where this story came from but it was fully formed in my head when I woke up, so I wrote it. I went over my word goal for the week by 71 words! For the title, I scrolled through my childhood lullaby cd, “Lullaby Magic” until I found a lyric I liked. “If dreams there be,” is from Goodnight, My Someone.
The first night Castiel ever slept as a human, he fell asleep in a chair at a dingy motel table with research books laid open all around him. His head was lolled across the back of the chair, arms splayed out at his sides and when he woke, Sam and Dean were both standing next to him, staring.
“You’ve got some drool,” Dean told him and went to take a shower.
The second night, Dean convinced Cas to come lay down in his bed next to him. Cas was reluctant, insistent the previous night had been a fluke.
“So?” Dean said, “What’s the worst that could happen then? You’ll lay down, Sam and I will fall asleep, you’ll turn on the TV and watch bad infomercials all night.”
Cas grudgingly agreed, but still refused to get underneath the covers.
He must have fallen asleep at some point because in the morning, Dean woke to find Cas’s cheek smooshed against Dean’s forehead and his legs thrown over the top of Dean’s own, still trapped beneath the covers.
Sam was standing at the foot of the bed, smirking at them in a way that could only mean 'I see you snuggling there’.
The third night, Sam had been on stakeout all evening and Dean and Cas were in the motel room alone.
Dean went to take a shower and came out to find Cas under the covers, sound asleep. He was on his side, curled up tight, face pressed into the pillow, eyelids fluttering in his sleep, breath coming softly in and out. The covers were wrapped around him like a cocoon and Dean would have minded the theft of his own damn blankets a lot more if he hadn’t suddenly been struck with how young Castiel looked.
Young and vulnerable.
Because Cas was human now.
He slept under covers and dreamed at night and nodded off in the backseat of the Impala only to wake up with his cheeks sun-flushed and his legs stuck to the upholstery.
It meant he could get sick and hurt and even die now and Dean felt the floor shift at the knowledge that he didn’t just have one little brother to look out for anymore.
In his sleep, Cas curled and uncurled his fingers and Dean reached out and took the man’s hand - because he was a man now - in his own.
Dean sat like that for awhile, watching Castiel sleep and wondered if this was the way Cas used to watch him sleep, if Cas had been thinking about Dean and protecting him and giving him this quiet night of rest or if Castiel-the-angel had merely been waiting with stoicism for Dean to wake up and face the next challenge.
When Sam came back, slipping quietly into the room like he expected them both to be asleep, Dean braced himself for a smirk and a smartass comment. Or at the very least, some jibe about how Sam had been stuck in the car on stakeout all night while Dean and Cas were warm and comfy and apparently holding hands.
Instead Sam just stood next to the bed and stared down at Cas with a soft smile on his face. Then he looked at Dean, in that way that said he knew exactly what Dean was thinking because they had been brothers all his life and said, “It’s okay, Dean. We’ll protect him together.”
The End
