In The Dead Of The Night, Hear Me Scream.

I was going to make a post about the grumpy day I had yesterday. I was actually going to make it last night but I was writing and editing my Halloween story until midnight. Now, in light of the storm damage, I thought I'd just be grateful instead. So, since I promised you all Halloween pics, let’s do that now.
This year we have added a Grim Reaper. He is on a sliding mechanism and is sound-activated. He lays down and when he goes off, he pops upright and evil-laughs and then says, “Welcome to my graveyard.” It’s awesome. The first day we had him out, the neighbors kids got off the bus and walked past and he popped up. The boy starts freaking out and pointing and shouting for his sister to come see. He comes back a little bit later with her and they stand out there trying to figure out how to make him go off. I opened the door and told them to clap their hands. The girl is about six and she couldn’t clap hard enough. She didn’t know it, but her brother had come right up behind her and he clapped his hands and the Reaper popped up and started scary-laughing and the girl just screamed so loud and took off running. After that she was out there making the Reaper go off constantly. I saw her showing some woman how to make the Reaper go off and I realized that she’s just accosting random people on the street to check out our graveyard.
And when I babysat my cousin's kids, the one 8 year old boy stopped by the Reaper and yelled to his mom to check it out and the Reaper went off. He screamed and jumped backwards, fell on his butt and then scrambled back in a panic. Kid was so embarrassed when he realized I saw him! Sadly, the Reaper is broken already. Either the girls broke him somehow playing out there or the weather did it. We never put him out in bad weather but the wind may have caused some damage or the early morning wet ground. He is going back out tomorrow night because he still looks cool even though he doesn’t work anymore.
I was going to post the actual pictures but my sister did that over at her journal this year, so I will just link to those. She does all the work anyways, so if you are impressed, drop her a comment!
Here are the pictures I posted last year, with a lot of night time shots.

Here are the pictures from this year, at my sister’s journal, with some really good close-ups.

And this is the Grim Reaper, the big new addition to the graveyard this year.
Next year we have to do some serious work on supporting the tombstones because the weather has just killed them this year. Anyways, enjoy the creepy and have an awesome Halloween! And stay dry and warm, if you can!

Awesome! How lucky for us!
P.s. Condolences on the Tigers, but congrats on their awesome season1
Thanks! It was sad that we got swept so horribly in the Series but we still won the ALCS, which is a huge deal. Only the 11th time in Tiger history. I've got to get to the store to get a AL Champion tshirt this weekend.

Date: 2012-11-02 12:50 am (UTC)I only got to go out ounce this year, thanks to a head injury,
You've had a recent head injury? I am so sorry to hear that, babe. Head injuries are no fucking joke, man, they are nasty little bitches. Hope you are feeling better.
The kids in our graveyard were hysterical to watch. I wish we had their reactions on tape when the Grim Reaper popped up for the first time. My cousin's kid falling on his butt was like something from America's Funniest Home Videos. :)

If you find some new way of keeping the tombstones in place better be sure to share. After the second time putting them back up at my place I just left them be til last night when I fixed it all up again.

Date: 2012-11-02 12:57 am (UTC)LOL We had several people look at him to try to fix him but I'm afraid he has, indeed, bit the dust. Still, we can set him out in the graveyard. Every graveyard needs a proper Grim Reaper. He still looks freaking awesome. I noticed he looks even creepier from behind, when all you can see is his black cloak.
I thought it was hysterical that the little neighbor girl was just grabbing random strangers and making them look at our graveyard! The random people trying to walk down our sidewalk might not have thought so though. lol

My sister actually wants to try attaching plywood backing to them next year, to offer them some weight. To keep them in the ground, we actually got little wooden stakes like you would have in a garden and put one in front and one behind each tombstone and then slid the tombstone in between the two stakes. This worked pretty well for the smaller ones but the wind was so bad this year that the bigger ones ended up ripping in half. Like the wind was trying to knock them over but the bottoms were so secure on the stakes, that instead the top halves just ripped off.
So I think next year we will try the stakes and the plywood backing for weights. Halloween is a lot of work!!

Date: 2012-11-06 09:48 pm (UTC)If you have never been there, you would love the Edward Gorey house in Cape Cod.
Dude. I want to go to that house! You've been? I'd never even heard of it before.

"The sight of Uncle gives no pleasure,
But rather causes much alarm:
The children know that at his leisure
He plans to have them come to harm."

Date: 2012-11-09 01:48 am (UTC)The graveyard looked pretty cool this year. We probably won't get any big new thing next year, since we are going to have to spend some money to get the tombstones rigged up somehow so the wind won't keep taking them out. Hmmmm, maybe I'll save up and surprise my sister with an awesome new decoration next year.
