5 DAYS UNTIL HOBBIT VIEWING!! Raise your hand if you are going!…/hand!/
In preparation for the viewing, I started rereading the book a few days ago. I have this great Book of Dragons that is illustrated by Michael Hague, my favorite illustrator. In it there is a snippet of the Smaug story (titled Bilbo Baggins and Smaug) and the piece of artwork with it is just brilliant. After I got into The Lord of the Rings, my mom went and found a beautiful version of The Hobbit that was illustrated by Michael Hague. His colors are so vibrant. So that is what I am reading right now. I just got through the part with the spiders.
As I started rereading, I noticed how many iconic lines are in the first four pages of the book alone. Besides the opening line, some of my favorites are…
This hobbit was a very well-to-do hobbit, and his name was Baggins.
This is a story of how a Baggins had an adventure, and found himself doing and saying things altogether unexpected.
Gandalf! If you had heard only a quarter of what I have heard about him, and I have only heard very little of all there is to hear, you would be prepared for any sort of remarkable tale.
“What do you mean?” he said. “Do you wish me a good morning, or mean that it is a good morning whether I want it or not; or that you feel good this morning; or that it is a morning to be good on?”
“We are plain quiet folk and have no use for adventures. Nasty disturbing uncomfortable things! Make you late for dinner!”
“Good morning!” he said at last. “We don’t want any adventures here, thank you!”
5 MORE DAYS!

Date: 2012-12-11 10:06 pm (UTC)But for Return of the King, I went to the midnight showing at the big theater out of town and even though the crowd was huge, it was pretty orderly. If I was a few years younger, I'd be at the midnight showing this time too. As it is, Friday is as long as I can wait!
I'll refrain from just spouting off at you about the movie until you have seen it then!!

Date: 2012-12-12 01:16 am (UTC)Feel free to squee - the thing that's amazing me at the moment is how hot Thorin appears to be!

Date: 2012-12-16 09:24 pm (UTC)You did tell me that! I think that's kind of cool that you made it like a family outing. But how could your mom-in-law think the first movie ended so quickly?! Peter Jackson doesn't know how to do anything quickly!
Thorin is very hot (his fucking beautiful eyes, man) but also Kili and Fili are very good-looking and funny as well. Some of the dwarves are Gimli-esque in their look but some are pretty good-looking, if you don't mind the beards.

Date: 2012-12-16 11:55 pm (UTC)Since TAHtm is also (very neatly) bearded, I think I'll be okay with hot'n'hairy dwarves.

Date: 2012-12-12 04:24 am (UTC)This is the same theater, in fact, that I saw both the first Star Wars movie and Raiders of the Lost Ark. It was remodeled a few years ago and is super nice. 70 ft screen -- WOOT!

I think the only Star Wars movie I saw in the theater - (the first time through, not the releases) - was Return of the Jedi. I was, uh, four, maybe five at the time. See that makes your tradition even better...it's the theater you saw all the most pivotal movies of your life in! Plus, the new 70 foot screen doesn't hurt at all!

Date: 2012-12-12 07:45 pm (UTC)I had to come by your journal and just squee at you about that fact, and of course the first post is about The Hobbit!
I think I might cry in the cinema. Or before the cinema. Or after. Or all of the above. It's just... this is... LotR! Only not, but it IS! And I can't...
I'm actually tearing up here. Wow. I'm very emotional about this film. Maybe I should warn the boyfriend? :p
What I was trying to say was that I'm very excited, and I know you are too, so I wanted to be excited with you! Weee! *twirls around* This is so awesome!
God, I can't wait.

Right? Bilbo's speech about 'home', omg...that's the spot that made me cry actual tears. I teared up during various swell of the music too; The Shire theme, the Ring theme, but that home-speech fucking did me in.
Now start writing me some Kili/Fili/Bilbo slash immediately, woman! Why not?
edited in case you didn't get to see it yet, though I think you have, but I cut out a spoiler just in case.
