That's My Favorite Guy!

So, a few weeks back The BFF and I found this great coney place we had never tried before. It was kind of funny though, because that week we had spent at least three hours on the phone talking to each other and then two more hours that afternoon when she came down and then two more hours at dinner and we never ran out of things to say. It’s pretty awesome actually. I swear, we spent most of that time talking about Jensen & Misha and their stupid faces and how they ruin everything! Fuck those guys and their beautiful awesomeness.

Which leads me to this story, where I spent all of therapy on Tuesday talking to C and then called her on Wednesday to tell her something else. And C went into work the next day and told K, “I was so excited to see a message from her on my phone. I haven’t gotten one in so long,” and K goes, dead-serious, “Wait…didn’t you girls just see each other on Tuesday?” and C yells at him, “We had more things to say, okay?!”

Anyways, my sister was out of town this weekend and The BFF and I spent Friday at our coney place and then catching up on Arrow - (OMG, “But I love him! He’s my man!” is the greatest Arrow moment EVER!) - and getting really silly up in here. Saturday we went to see Star Trek and then got subs and came back home to watch some Bob’s Burgers - (Kristen Schaal was perfectly cast as Louise, right?) - and then watch Thor again, mostly for Agent Coulson reasons. Today we spent the afternoon dinking around on our devices and watching some “You Live In What?” and then Deathly Hallows.

On the Star Trek front….AWESOME. It gave me everything I wanted from that movie. The action, the humor - (the best being all the Kirk/Spock/Uhura stuff) - the emotional moments which felt more poignant this time around but I mainly think it was just different kinds of emotional moments. It also turned the expected things on their heads and I really enjoyed that about it a lot. I was NOT expecting Pike’s death and Chris Pine’s acting in that fucking scene, man, I got major teary-eyed. I was expecting Kirk’s death - (figured they were going to turn that one around from the original) - but I also felt it lacked the emotional punch because even as he was dying, I knew Bones was going to use the blood to save him. I kind of felt like if they don’t plan on making any more movies, they should have left Kirk dead because idk, it felt like a cop-out. But I have been informed that You Can’t Kill James Kirk in a Star Trek movie. I also really liked how they turned the whole Khan thing on its head and for awhile there, actually made him seem like the good guy. Plus, Kirk in this movie can literally be paired with anyone; Kirk/Bones, Kirk/Spock, Kirk/Spock/Uhura, Kirk/Carol, Kirk/Bones/Carol, Kirk/John Harrison, Kirk/Entire Starfleet Academy, but that last one’s a given.

My final thoughts on Star Trek are this: I was never that into the original series, but I remember at a very young age really liking Scotty the best. I don’t know what my exact feelings were towards him and I certainly was too young to have words to put to that feeling, but it was mostly just, “That’s my favorite guy!!”. Now, as an adult, with all the words at my disposal, I still look at Scotty and say, “That’s my favorite guy!!”.

I'm still so pissed off at the new Star Trek movie that I can't even talk about it yet.

After I saw the first reboot, I stood up in the theater as the credits started to roll and shouted 'What the hell was that?!'. This time, I managed to keep my mouth shut, but probably only because I wanted to cry.

The thing is, they're great movies. They really are. They're just not Star Trek. Hey, JJ Abrams? There's no such thing as a 'warp stream'. And if there is now, then your new universe is stupid! Also, why the hell did you need your warp drive back online to fire your thrusters? One has nothing to do with the other.

And get some of your own damn ideas, would you? About a third of the way through that movie I figured Kirk was going to kick it and I was wondering how they were going to pull off 'Reboot 3: The Search For Kirk' without Genesis. And that tribble? That like... son of tribble! It was about three times the size of a normal tribble.

It's like... he merged 'Wrath of Khan' with 'Space Seed', took away everything that made Khan's beef with Kirk personal (which was what made it FUN) and gave all Kirk's awesome scenes to Spock.

... Heh, okay, I guess I can talk about it :)

Like I said, they're great movies, but to an old school Trekkie, they're just not Star Trek.

I don't want to spend the next however many movies wondering what's going to be different or the same in this new universe and comparing everything to the original. Which, unless you haven't seen the original series', is impossible. Ugh, I just think reboot was such a bad, bad idea to start with.

Oh! One thing that did make my ears perk up a little was the mention of Section 31. It might actually be interesting to see how this universe handles that, as I feel like DS9 had something that could have been amazing, but kind of dropped the ball a little.

My list of movies to see this summer has gotten awfully long already....

You are not the only person who feels this way about the new Star Trek movie. I went with The BFF, who is a born and bred Trekkie and who basically said it was a fine movie, whatever, but...and then there was this long pause and she went, "I just wish they hadn't done Khan," in this broken little voice.

The thing is, they're great movies. They really are. They're just not Star Trek.

Which is probably why I liked it and you didn't. I mean, I watched Star Trek when I was younger and it was on the TV - (my dad was a huge fan so it was on our TV a lot though myself I preferred TNG to the original) - but I wasn't fannish about it. It wasn't 'my show', you know. So I am able to enjoy the reboots as just a fun afternoon at the movie that hit all the things I look for in a good movie.

And I have very little memory of the original Khan movie - (aside from, "Wow, Kirk and Spock are really good friends, aren't they, Dad?") - which probably helped immensely towards my enjoyment.

Your reaction to this movie is EXACTLY why I am 100% with a fiery venom never going to see the remade A-Team movie, which I am sure craps all over my childhood love.

My list of movies to see this summer has gotten awfully long already....

Really? What else is coming out beside, uh, Iron Man 3 (done), Star Trek and Thor. (is Thor during the summer?) I can't think of anything I am overly excited about until the new Hunger Games comes out, though I am definitely looking forward to Thor.

My advice on the new Star Trek is...if you liked the first reboot (you did, right?), go see this one. If you are a hardcore Trekkie (you aren't, are you?) just skip it because apparently it is sacreligious.

I still need to see Hansel and Gretel, Witch Hunters; I want to see Life of Pi (we'll watch it this weekend); the three you mentioned (Thor is in November, I think), and Now You See Me. I know there were others, but darned if I can recall what they were right now. The last week of school is eating my brain, of course.

I'm a pretty big TOS fan, but I very much enjoyed the first reboot movie. I don't actually think of it as a reboot so much as an AU (I mean, it really IS an AU, so...). I'm sure I'll be fine with the version of Khan's story that they give me, even if (as according to some) all of Kirk's coolness is handed to Spock instead. We'll see.

Hansel and Gretel, Witch Hunters;

Hansel & Gretel was fun! It wasn't overly stellar storytelling or anything but it was exactly what it promoted itself as - fun with hotties.

I kind of want to see The End, which is basically Seth Rogen and his boys in a movie about a group of friends who find out the world is ending and try to decide what to do with their last night on Earth. It makes me think of like what me and my fangirl friends would do if we found out the world was ending and we just decided to like hang out and chill with each other.

YES! If people get too picky with the differences in the world I will often yell at them, "Alternate Universe!!" like a crazy person. Idk that much about the original Trek anyways to nitpick myself but even so...Alternate Universe, handwave.

I'm sure I'll be fine with the version of Khan's story that they give me, even if (as according to some) all of Kirk's coolness is handed to Spock instead.

I felt like they varied enough from the original to make it interesting without making it not fit, if that makes sense. Take that with a grain of salt from someone whose knowledge of Trek-dom comes from my dad watching it. But as for Kirk's coolness being downplayed - not even a little. He is still Captain Motherfucking James Tiberus Kirk, Bitches. <--that's his full name, you know. He was maybe slightly more mature this time around, but only slightly and still fucking badass. As is Spock. As is Bones. As is Scotty.

Now You See Me has the guy from Zombieland as one of a group of magicians who hack banks and give money away. It just looks like FUN.
