shirebound, who asked for Sam & Arwen, friendship. You are a joy, darling! Merry Christmas!
Sam’s intention was to fetch Mr. Frodo some tea from the grand kitchen - everything in Rivendell seemed grand to Sam, but the kitchen more so than most - but he couldn’t just walk past the Lady Arwen without so much as a bow, it being impolite and all.
“My lady,” Sam said and bowed as low as he could, which was quite low as it turns out. Sam nearly lost his footing.
Arwen stepped out of the open doorway in time to grab Sam’s arm and steady him.
“There is no need for that, Samwise,” she told him.
“Oh, I disagree!” Sam said and blushed furiously. “I mean…it is proper.”
“Well then, it is appreciated,” Arwen told him and reached up over her head to straighten the mistletoe there.
“Mistletoe!” Sam cried out and turned even redder than before.
“Why, yes. Do you have this plant in The Shire?” Arwen asked him curiously.
“We do,” Sam told her. “Plenty of it to be found in the East Farthing.”
“We hang it most often during the Winter Solstice, for protection,” Arwen told him and then looked off into the distance, towards something only she could see there. “It seems we all need a bit of protection these days.”
“Aye,” Sam told her. “But I have never heard of mistletoe used for protection.”
“No?” Arwen asked him, looking back down at the hobbit. “Do you not hang it in your windows and doorways then?”
“Oh, our doorways, yes,” Sam said. “But not for protection.”
“Decoration?” Arwen asked, ever the more curious, as Sam’s face continued to grow redder by the minute.
“Well our custom is…you see…it’s meant as a symbol of…love.”
“Oh,” Arwen said in surprise. “That is different from our ways, but perhaps a bit nicer in spirit,” she told him with a smile.
“It is customary when one is standing under a mistletoe to…” and Sam trailed off a bit, looked down at his own feet, before blurting out, “Receive a kiss!”
“Oh,” Arwen said again and this time there was a light tease to her voice. “Well, Samwise, I am always open to learning new customs.”
“No, my lady, I could not,” Sam protested.
“I would be offended if you didn’t,” Arwen told him, leaning a bit forward. “I do try to be hospitability, after all.”
Sam was perhaps the brightest shade of red ever rendered and his eyes were as round as saucers.
Lady Arwen was the most beautiful creature he had ever laid eyes upon, a beauty that surpassed Middle Earth, and she was waiting expectantly for a kiss from Samwise Gamgee, the gardener’s son.
Arwen’s eyes were twinkling with mirth and delight when Sam leaned forward. He wasn’t sure if it was proper to kiss her lips or if it would offend if he did not or if perhaps he should go for a quick peck to the cheek, like Rosie Cotton had once offered Sam at the Yuletide celebration.
Sam leaned up toward Arwen’s cheek and at the last moment changed his mind and so ended up pressing a short, soft kiss to the corner of Lady Arwen’s lips. She smelled of sweet honeysuckle and warm fires and when Sam pulled back, she was smiling at him with a magnificent light in her eyes.
“Now I know a bit more of the world, Samwise Gamgee,” she said and bowed before him, then turned back into the room she had come from.
Sam stood rooted in place for a long moment, before heading quickly back to Mr. Frodo’s quarters, Frodo’s tea completely forgotten from his mind.
