Hiccup, The Dragon Tamer.

This little guy was found in the park being bullied by some boys. He was brought into the vet’s office where my cousin works. They estimate him at about 5 weeks, 1 ½ pounds, I believe. Due to his injuries, they had to amputate one of his back legs. Next he needed a home. We told our cousin not to show us any pictures, because we know we are weak. Last night she showed us pictures anyway. Today we visited with him for an hour. He should be ready to come home to us this weekend.



Yes, we are getting a kitten. We have named him Hiccup. He will be our Dragon-Tamer.

And I can't wait for him to come home!

He is so sweet, but bossy and full of it! He wants to eat your fingers and we are trying to break him of that but it's so cute when he thinks he is fierce and going to get your finger with his tiny little baby teeth! My sister is going to be Mama and I am Lady, just like with Pippin and Kirk, cuz my cranky old man doesn't like to share. Actually, Roo has been fine with Hiccup since he doesn't sleep in our room, he sleeps in Sis' room. Roo doesn't care about anything except that he gets me and our bed all to himself at night! Hiccup likes to be swaddled and have his little butt patted and I sing him to sleep and it is so cute!

Hiccup is so sweet and he wants to play with all the big boy cats here and they are tolerating it like good boys. He doesn't realize that he only weighs like 2 pounds, he thinks he is so fierce! And we just swaddled him up and he falls right to sleep but he is so disgruntled about it because he thinks he will miss something exciting!

The woman who rescued Hiccup also rescued a sibling kitten and took them home for the night and the poor sibling died in the night, so she brought Hiccup in to the vet in the morning. I wish she had called the police and gotten those boys in some trouble. All I can think about is my little brother and his friends when he was like 13 and they were these little punk skateboarders who I know got up to stealing and smoking and fights and whatever, but they also helped any injured animals they came across and rescued strays and stuff. Like these boys who were torturing Hiccup could take a serious life lesson from most unruly teens because even they know who don't hurt an animal!

My sister at first said she thought we were being selfish, wanting a kitten when we have such good cats already and I was like, 'It's not for us, it's for him. It's not whether or not we need a kitten, it is that he needs us, he needs a home, he needs a good home and he needs our home.' And that is so true. This little guy has been through so much already, that he totally needed to come home with us.

What an adorable little kitten. How could ANYONE be mean to such a sweetie. I don't do much hating, but I HATE people who are cruel to animals. HATE, HATE, HATE them!!! 5-1/2 weeks is too soon to even leave his mother. I wonder what happened to the rest of the litter.

You and your sister are VERY kind to take him in. It's a shame he lost a leg, but the rest of his life will be wonderful with the two of you.

I too hate people who are mean to animals. They are helpless and can't understand what you want from them and just...no. I wish the woman who rescued him had called the police on those boys! When she rescued him, he had a sibling with him and she took that kitten too but unfortunately it died in the night before she could get them to a vet. Idk about the rest of the liter or the mother. He was too young to be away from his mama, which is one reason my cousin wanted us to take him. We found Kirk and Pippin when they were only like 3 weeks old and nursed them and taught them how to use the litter and all of that, so she knew we would be good with Hiccup. Also as kids we had a three legged cat, so she knew we would be good with that too.

He is so young that he doesn't even seem to realize any difference with the missing leg. He won't be a jumper like Pippin, but that just means he won't be able to get on the kitchen counters while my sister is cooking! I don't think it will hold him back at all and the surgery site is healing quite well, thankfully.

It sounds like a match made in heaven...you, your sister and Hiccup. I hope you have many, many years together. I've rescued so many cats and kittens in my lifetime. I should do an entry someday about them, but it would probably end up being a novel rather than a journal entry.

He isn't sweet, he's a fierce Viking, he says! He thinks he is going to get the big cats and they just stare at him like, 'what is this little hoppy thing'.

We weren't planning on getting a kitten, yes, mostly because of my old cat, Roo, who is a bit cranky and possessive of me, so I told my sister we could get Hiccup as long as he was clearly hers and sleeps in her room, so that Roo can have me all to himself at night at least. This seems to be working out well. I am spending most of my days while my sister is at work playing with the kitten and then taking turns giving each of the other cats affectionate and play as well, so that no one is neglected and everyone still feels confident and loved. Integrating a new animals into the house is exhausting!

We still may get a French bulldog next spring and we still will get two kittens for me someday in the hopefully far off future when Roo passes, but for now, like I told my sister, it's not that we are getting a kitten, it's that the kitten is getting us.

I told my sister that it isn't so much about us getting a kitten as it is that this little guy deserves the wonderful home we can give him!

Idk what those cruel boys were doing, but I wish that woman who rescued Hiccup had called the police on those boys. They deserve to be taught a lesson!

He is so sweet and playful! He already recognizes me sister's voice and loves her and I think he knows that she is 'mama'. He hasn't quite gotten that I am Lady, but he knows I am the one that always has time for a good snuggle!

We have two cats that came to us at about the same age. One of them had the bitey problem for a bit. It's pretty common in kittens that leave their mother/litter too soon. It's usually not meant to be aggressive so much as a grooming thing or play thing but they haven't learned their strength yet. A combo of dramatic, "Ow, that hurt!"/sad face/no more pets if she bit again, and occasional hissing pretty much broke her of the habit eventually. She also used to try to grab people's heads and groom their hair, but she grew out of that as well.

Yeah, we got Kirk and Pippin at 3 weeks old (abandoned and tossed in the road, poor boos) and we dealt with the biting thing with them too. In the beginning with Hiccup it was biting and then trying to nurse, like he'd bite my finger and then suck it into his mouth and try to nurse on it. Now he has stopped trying to nurse (2 months old now) and is just really crazy riled up 'hunting' cat who will get overstimulated and just nip-nip-nip at you. We have a couple different toys that he likes to chew on, so when he starts doing that, we set him aside and give him a chewing toy to bite at instead. It seems to work. I am sure it'll stop as he mellows out more, but in the meantime I have got some battle scars! Also, like you said with the hair thing, he chews on my hair but sometimes gets overexcited and bites my scalp! I had another cat who did the hair thing and she never grew out of it. I think Hiccup will though, it's from being away from his litter/mother, like you said.
