Author's Notes: For the Galentine’s verse and
matchboximpala’s prompt for Darcy and Jane. This is the first of the series I actually wrote, it came so easy. I’ve never written Jane before, so there’s that. The biggest thing I struggled with here was what to name the story!
Dedication: For
matchboximpala, you are such a cool chick and I am so happy we have such a nerdy friendship, you and I! Happy Galentine’s Day, babe!
Three days.
Jane had been working on the same problem for three days now. Of course, three days wasn’t very long, considering the kind of work Jane did. But on the other hand, when you consider it had been three days straight, well, that’s another thing.
There had been two times - just two - where Jane had fallen asleep at her desk, waiting for some process or another to finish running. Darcy had found her, like always, and covered her with a blanket. She thought about sliding a pillow under Jane’s head, but the risk of waking her friend up - which would, of course, lead to Jane going right back to work - was too great, so Darcy had just settled for the blanket.
Jane hadn’t slept more than three hours either time and six hours in three days was not really enough to count as sleep.
“I spilled…something…on your blanket,” Jane told her once, sheepishly.
“You always do,” Darcy said with a grin.
“Why do you loan me blankets then?”
“Because you’re my girl,” Darcy said with a shrug.
“I can buy you a new blanket,” Jane told her.
“You already did,” Darcy said and took Jane to the back closet, where there was a pile of thirty different soft fuzzy blankets stacked there, clean and ready for Jane to spill all the somethings on she wanted to.
“Oh,” Jane said. “That’s smart.”
“Hey, you don’t pay me the very little bucks for nothing,” Darcy said with a wink.
***
Once Jane called Darcy into her lab.
“I think I’ve found something you’ll like,” Jane said.
“Naked pictures of Thor on your phone?” Darcy asked, hopefully.
“No,” Jane said with a laugh. “I’ve been revamping my playlists while I wait for the computer to finish its process.”
“Or you could be sleeping,” Darcy suggested with a scowl.
“Pweft,” Jane said through her teeth. “I’ll lose my train of thought if I sleep.”
That made no sense to Darcy, but it made more sense than most of the things Jane said to her while they were standing in the middle of the lab, so Darcy just decided to roll with it.
“Listen to this Imagine Dragons song I had completely forgotten about. It’s from their debut album,” Jane told her and switched on the music.
She wasn’t wrong, Darcy did really like it.
***
“Hey, Darcy,” Jane said one time when Darcy brought her food and coffee. “I don’t have nudes, but want to see some shirtless Thor pics?”
Darcy really did.
***
Another time Jane caught Darcy sneezing. She had done it quite a few times that afternoon, but this was the time that Jane had caught her.
“Take these,” Jane said, shoving pills at Darcy.
“What?” Darcy asked, confused as ever. She wasn’t above taking random pills people shoved at her, but she liked to know what they were first.
“For your cold.”
“How did you…you noticed that?” Darcy asked her.
“Of course.”
“Through the haze of your work?” Jane never noticed anything when she was working, let alone some person sneezing in the background of her brain.
“I always notice you,” Jane told her and it was so sincere that Darcy turned a strange shade of red.
***
“Change your clothes,” Darcy said and handed Jane a fresh outfit.
“You change your clothes,” Jane mumbled.
“What?” Darcy asked.
“What?” Jane said, looking up from the alignment maps spread out in front of her.
“Change your clothes. Maybe shower. Fix your hair. Babe, this look is so not working for you.”
“Oh,” Jane said, looking down at herself. “I think I need coffee. Good coffee.”
“I can get that,” Darcy said.
“Take money out of my purse,” Jane told her.
“I always do.”
“Get yourself something too,” Jane told her.
“I always do.”
***
“Jane,” Darcy said for the fifth time.
‘Always notice me, my ass,’ Darcy thought, though not without affection.
“Jane!”
“What?” Jane asked, heading flying up.
It occurred to Darcy that her friend might have actually been asleep with her eyes open.
“Come with me. It’s a special day.”
“What? Why?” Jane asked, bewildered and trying to reach for her computer, even while Darcy latched onto Jane’s arm and started pulling her towards the kitchen.
Darcy had set up the kitchen island with a bouquet of white roses and My Little Pony plates and napkins - ‘Because friendship is magic,’ she’d tell Jane later, when Jane asked why My Little Pony - and a ridiculous stack of waffles.
Shaped like hearts.
“What? Why?” Jane asked again, even more bewildered now.
“Because it’s Galentine’s Day,” Darcy told her.
“Valentine’s,” Jane said, distracted by the stack of waffles.
“No, Gal-entine’s. It’s the day before Valentine’s and it’s meant to celebrate your female friendships.”
“That’s sweet, Darc, but you can’t make up holidays,” Jane told her.
“It’s a real holiday!” Darcy cried. “Do you want my waffles or not?”
“Yes, yes, they look delicious, thank you,” Jane said and scurried to sit down at the island. “Waffles are my favorite.”
“Duh,” Darcy said. “Except of course for…” and she went to the oven and pulled out a tray of bacon.
“Bacon!” Jane cried and now she seemed to be onboard with Galentine’s Day.
“Heart-shaped waffles and bacon,” Jane said. “I like this made-up holiday.”
“It’s a real holiday! As much as the commercialized Valentine’s Day, which is just to sell us crap we don’t need and guilt us into buying it for our loved ones and make us feel bad if we don’t have a significant other and…”
“Darcy,” Jane said calmly and Darcy skidded to a stop in her tirade.
“Sorry. Oh!” Darcy cried and reached to get the gift bag off the top of the fridge. “Speaking of commercialization, I got you a present.”
“Darcy,” Jane said, though this time with much more affection and less scolding.
Darcy watched her dig through the mounds of unnecessary tissue paper until she pulled out a very small necklace chain. Attached to the chain was a very small telescope.
“Awww, look, it’s a tiny telescope,” Jane said, smiling from ear to ear. “It’s so cute.”
“It really works too. It’s got some super magnified whatever-the-heck in there so you can really use it as a telescope.”
“Oh my goodness, Darcy, that is so sweet,” Jane said and then looked up, pink in her cheeks. “I didn’t get you anything. I mean, I didn’t know it was a holiday, but still, I didn’t get you anything.”
Darcy shrugged. “That’s okay, boss. I get the best present of all. You.”
Now it was Jane’s turn to go a strange shade of red in the cheeks and Darcy fist-bumped herself - not metaphorical, but actually, literally, fist-bumped herself - at the accomplishment of turning Jane Foster red in the face.
“Okay,” Darcy said. “Let’s eat.”
“Heart-shaped waffles are super cute,” Jane told her.
“I have other shaped waffle makers - the Death Star, the Tardis, Captain America’s shield - but hearts seemed the most appropriate for this holiday of love.”
“My best friend is a nerd,” Jane said fondly.
“Tiny telescope around your neck,” Darcy reminded her with a grin. “My best friend is a nerd too.”
“To our nerdy friendship,” Jane said and toasted Darcy with a strip of bacon.
“Indeed,” Darcy replied and went to serve the heart-shaped potato cakes from the oven.
