dodger_sisterI saw the doctor today. They always have to ask you about your social life and hobbies - checking to make sure that a mostly-homebound person is not lying around in their own filth wallowing in despair and loneliness or something. They always ask this question, so idk why the resident-doctor today felt like asking me, "So, what kind of things do you do for fun?!" in this faux-chipper 'let's be best friends!'voice. I know it's a question on their little checklist - just ask me, lady. Anyways, this conversation happened...
DR: What kind of things do you do for fun?
Me: I get on my computer, the internet. My best friend has been living in our basement this summer, so that's been fun.
DR: That's nice. Dr. H mentioned that you like to use your computer. What kinds of things do you do on it?
/momentarily think about watching porn/
Me: Um, I like to write. I belong to some writing groups.
DR: Cool.
/stupidly thinking that is the end of that, right?/
DR: What kinds of things do you write?
/seriously, let it go, lady!! I was being as vague and yet informative as I could be! OMG. What do I say when I am working on a threesome story involving an angel?!? SO I JUST STARTED LAUGHING HYSTERICALLY. AND I COULDN'T STOP./
DR: Um, maybe I don't want to know?
Me: /still laughing/ Can we just say I write adult fiction and leave it at that?
DR: Oh. Sure.

DR: /pause and then.../ And you put that up on the internet?
Me: Yes. It's like a group where you can put your stories and then people read them and give you feedback and criticism and you use it to learn to write better.
DR: Oh. Wow. That actually sounds really cool.

Someday some doctor will ask me these questions and then exclaim..."Omg, you write fanfic! What fandom are you in?!" It'll happen.
In other news - I was watching a show the other night and after it ended, My Name Is Earl came on. It was the episode where the car from Smokey and The Bandit was at the county fair. They were playing the song, "Eastbound and Down" and I was singing along (cuz I know the words to that song and I love it and that does NOT make me lame) and then I thought, "Heh, someone should make a SPN music vid to this song. It'd be awesome," and I went to youtube and looked and...SOMEONE DID!!! Awesome.

My regular doctor actually knows I am writing fanfic on the internet and that most of it is adult M/M. But she was totally cool about it. Maybe a little weirded out since she has known me since I was like 12, but I had to give her a better answer than "I am on the internet". Now I think she purposefully sends the resident-doctors in and makes them ask me just to be funny.
He used to give me assignments to ask my friendslist and stuff. It was pretty cool.
That does sound cool. I can't imagine trying to be as honest and open with a therapist as one has to be and yet keeping such a huge piece of your life from them. To find a way to incorporate it is actually kind of awesome.

This would never happen to me. Unless I'm talking to K. or J. fandom conversations generally don't exist in my RL (and K. and J. know nothing about my slash habit. In fact, J. would be very, very embarrassed to admit this, but he has secret slightly homophobic tendencies. Don't get me wrong. He's in a band where the lead singer is completely out, but when that lead singer starts over-sharing, J. runs for the hills. There's only so much he can handle and I can't blame him.)

I gave up a long time ago on trying to have any normal conversations. It's not even just since I quit working either (though it may have gotten worse since then). I used to quote movies all the time as a kid, and it just sort of broke off into saying fandom things as well. I just don't care if no one else understands anything I say.
Even when I am saying "normal" things, I am thinking about fan-shit. Like the other day, I made a perfectly normal statement to someone and when they walked away my sister was all, "You were totally thinking about that one fic where Misha..." "Yep. Totally." 8)

I did get a little vindication re: friends that say "I don't understand why you don't just write your own stuff" (which launches me into the ST-SW novel franchise): Mr. woods informed me that one of his fav writers, James Patterson, has been writing one chapter of a book, doing an outline, then handing it off to writing students to finish, keeping everything IC. So, the husband gets the fanfic thing. He even picked up on something I wrote, that I had tried IRL before posting the fic so I could see if an activity I described would, in fact, work.
(me: "and then they do this, and this."
him: "waitaminit...isn't that what you did last night?"
me: "research, dear, research".
him: "carry on.")

That actually really rocks. What a fun assignment! It is less the fanfic thing I feel I have to defend, than the whole fact that most of what I write is NC-17. Althougb less and less these days. Back in the day, all I wrote was NC-17 but not the case anymore. I have been told I am maturing but come on, - me? Mature? Really, if I hadn't been in the middle of writing a threesome involving an angel, I might not have lost my shit so much, but I didn't even know what to say right then!

hahaha that I had tried IRL before posting the fic so I could see if an activity I described would, in fact, work. - Awesome. That is dedication to your writing! I don't do that, but the number of things that are said to me/by me in actual life and then find their way into my stories is astounding. Especially things that the people saying them don't realize sound dirty and then I use them later for porn - they would be shocked!

Yes! The vid is so Season One delicious. I have been having a serious hankering to rewatch some S1. When Dean used to smile - like really smile. /sigh/ I love Eastbound and Down, my dad used to sing it to us in the car. I have seen the first and second S & The B movies. It's the perfect song for SPN too - but now I want a "Sammy and The Impala" au fic where Dean drives the Impala and Sam drives the semi and Cas gets picked up on the side of the road, running away from his controlling family.
OMG, that overview of SPN fandom!! Yes! This is why our fandom rocks the hardest!!
