So Livejournal likes giving blowjobs. Because it sucks. Or it was my laptop that sucks. Or my laptop and Livejournal were involved in some sort of mutual suck-off together.

I typed up my last entry and clicked 'post' and it took forever to do anything. Then when it did, LJ told me to 'view the entry' but I just clicked over to my homepage. My post wasn't there.

Luckily - since the one DDOS attack where I typed up a 800 word entry and then it disappeared when I posted it - I have learned to save my posts to documents before I click the button. So I just emailed it to myself and then turned on my desktop computer and copied and posted it. Then I checked my inbox and I had a comment on the first post (that one that wasn't visible on my LJ). So I clicked over to my Friend's List and saw two entries from myself. It took a minute for me to realize one of them (the first one which I posted from my laptop) was dated February 17th. I looked in my archives and there it was in February.

I am still not sure if it was Livejournal or my laptop. And today, first my laptop wouldn't even do anything once it was turned on and then later it worked really well and let me reply to comments from it and everything. Idk.

I got my laptop in 2002 or 2003 and it was used then. I had been wondering what to save up my money for next - since I have been saving for over a year for the new mattress I just bought - and I guess I know what is next. The BFF recently got a Kindle Nook, which is awesome and I was thinking of getting one of those, but I think a laptop would be better.

1) To use in bed. Like right now, I could be catching up on LJ from a semi-laying down position and not have to worry about dizzy spells. I could also use it in bed when it is just too damn cold to be outside the blankets - happens a lot in Michigan.

2) To use when I end up in the hospital. Crossing my fingers that I never end up in the hospital for the extended stay I had when I broke both my legs, but someday I will have to have my hip surgery again. And the last time I was in the hospital, with the seizure, I could have really used the distraction of the internet. The hospital jacks my anxiety levels up insanely and any distraction helps.

3) To browse the internet and make LJ posts and replies. Then when I am too ill to sit up at my desktop, I can still talk with you guys.

4) To type stories instead of scribbling them on notepaper like I usually do when I am sick but have to get the words out. This would also come in handy in the summer, when I want to sit on the sun-porch and type. I wrote in notebooks on the porch one summer and then I ended up having to type up 60,000 words, which was not fun. If I could take my laptop out on the porch, that would be awesome.

5) To watch DVDs or stream Netflix. I could stream Netflix on my laptop in my bedroom, including shows that are limited to screening on your computer and not available through the Tivo. (Currently this is "Raising Hope" and "Merlin", both of which I want to watch but don't want to have to sit at my computer to view). Plus, I could use it as a DVD player when I am in the hospital since I just gave the portable one my cousin loaned me back to her.

I wish it was legal to advertise in the newspaper for a sugar-daddy. I'd be fairly undemanding for a kept-woman. Right now I just want a laptop.

These are all EXCELLENT reasons for a laptop. Especially the hanging out on the porch in nice weather and writing one.

One day a few summer agos, The BFF came down for the day and we both broke out our laptops and sat on the porch writing and it was kind of nice. I mean, it probably looked lame because we were sitting on the porch staring at our computers, not speaking to each other, but it was actually quite nice.

No, those are some of the most awesome days ever! I invite people over regularly during summer, and suggest that they bring something to read/write, and a bathing suit. We tan, we write, we talk, we read, we soak... and then we do it all over again! Our backyard is this little sanctuary, and I love it.

That sounds lovely and perfect. We like to do just that with our feet soaking in The Nephew's wading pool. :)

Ours is a grown-up sized wading pool - three feet deep, eight across. Perfect for soaking up to your chin, and conveniently solar heated to a very pleasant tempeature. (Or ten feet across, depending on what size is at the store for $50 including pump and filter!)

I think we talked about our pools last year. Yours is for more than 'wading' - it's a 'soaking' pool, lol. Ours is an inflatable dragon. When we sit with our feet in it, the water goes about up to our calves.

Yours sounds much nicer. :) Sadly, we don't have enough room in the backyard for a pool even that size.

Ha, we sure might have had the pool conversation already. I'm excited that it's time to set it up again.

Oh the other hand, it's totally NOT a Viking pool, which yours is.

I'd literally be lost without my laptop. I have to spend pretty much all day in bed with my legs elevated, so I splurged and bought one of those nifty hospital tables that slide under the bed and have my laptop set up on it. Best purchase I ever made. :)

I hope you're feeling a bit better, sweetie.

That's what I was thinking too - a laptop would be great for when I am too sick to get out of bed. I have been thinking it for months but I figured the new mattress was more important to buy first. But the other day I read one of your posts where you were sitting in bed watching hours of Sherlock vids and I thought, "I need a laptop too!". ;)

Thanks. The doctor says I just have to 'wait it out' - which sucks ass but I guess that's what I am going to do.

Having a laptop is very convenient. I don't have a sugar daddy but my boyfriend tends to buy me electronics for Christmas ^_^; but I'm not complaining about that.

Awesome boyfriend! Between my dad and my sister I have managed to get a few really good items - a Nintendo DS and an IPod and new phone. The sugar-daddy thing has the added bonus of sex though. (as you can tell, I am imagining a super-hot sugar-daddy, but whatever, it's my fantasy!)

I have to buy a bunch of new clothes (it's been a big decision which geek tees to buy!)but I figure even with that and the large number of birthdays coming up, I will probbaly have saved enough by July, maybe sooner.

Ooh new clothes, always nice, I need to consider that soon. July is a good date.

I saved up and paid for half of my current laptop as a birthday/graduation present.

So many of my tees have worn through and then I gained some weight this winter and it all seems to be in my chest, so suddenly all my tshirts are riding up and showing my belly. I need new tees and new tank tops and new shoes. My big problem is cutting down on the number of things I have picked out - I am kind of a clothes whore. Also this means I will have to throw out some of my favorite clothes and I never can quite bring myself to do it.

If I weren't buying all the clothes in the world and also probably getting The Nephew a new bike for his birthday, I could probably do the laptop by May - but The Nephew needs a bike and I need shirts that don't show my stomach (that's how old I have gotten- I refuse to wear belly shirts anymore).

You know, you can get netbooks for pretty damn cheap, these days. That's what I have and if you mostly use it for word or web browsing, it's just as good as a laptop. And you can buy external hard drives and dvd drives and stuff for it, if you want to spend a little extra, but I find I don't miss them.

Date: 2012-03-26 07:05 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dodger-sister.livejournal.com
Thanks! How is the netbook for typing? I type super fast and even on the laptop I have now, it makes it difficult. I definitely want the DVD drive but if a netbook is that much cheaper then the extra cost wouldn't be a big deal.

Date: 2012-03-27 02:22 pm (UTC)

Yeah, I actually find I prefer a netbook now. When it's time for a new one, I"ll stick with these instead of going back to a laptop.

I have an external DVD drive and it's fine. That way the actual computer is more portable when I want to take it somewhere but I can always plug the drive in if I want to watch DVDs.

The keyboard is different, absolutely. When you first try it out, I guarantee you'll hate it. I almost didn't buy mine because it felt so weird to type on it at first, but you'll get used to it pretty quickly.

I agree with what [livejournal.com profile] rockstarpeach said...I have a netbook I bought like two years ago that was all of $250. I have Office, Photoshop, iTunes, Skype, and about 15 other applications I've downloaded and everything works smoothly. If all you need it for is surfing the web and writing stories (or the occasional arty endeavor) like me, a netbook would be perfect.

Drawbacks: Tumblr is nearly impossible to see on such a small screen, which is mostly crappy Tumblr user-created pages at fault. And I do run into problems seeing large web pages sometimes. There's no DVD drive. But, it sits on my lap and it's small enough to take anywhere. It also has a 8-hour battery life.

Also, girl, don't you have a Wii? You can watch Netflix streaming on that!

Date: 2012-03-26 07:21 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dodger-sister.livejournal.com
Thanks! So the Netbook isn't good on larger-sized webpages? Because I usually blow my screens up to like 150% to spare my eyes the strain. Though I do like the sound of it being light-weight, small enough to fit on my lap and the 8 hour battery life (especially the battery life!) Hmmm...I will definitely check out netbooks when I get enough money saved.

I can stream Netflix through my wonderful Tivo actually. But some shows won't drop into your que. You have the option to click 'play' but not 'add to streaming'. It's weird, like some things are just available by disc and others you can drop into a streaming option and watch from the Tivo...and then some you can only click 'play' and watch from your computer. Idk why because if they are paying for the streaming rights then why not make it available to stream from all sources. Like "Raising Hope" is the kind of show that you just want to veg on the couch and watch 5 hours of in a row and yet the only options for it in the Netflix are "play' and 'disc'.

Those are all perfectly good reasons for a new laptop. I third the netbook tho. I had picked up a used laptop for myself some time ago and when it died it's craped up hard drive death I got a netbook on sale (bout $200 if I remember correctly) and I take that thing with me every where. It won't do duty as a portable dvd player obviously, but for anything where all you need is an internet connection you're golden. (for streaming stuff though I recommend going wired instead of wireless, but then again I have a crap ton cat5 cable in various lengths around the house so plugging in if I need to isn't a problem)

Everyone seems to be backing the Netbook option! I know you like yours for being 'on the go'. Someone else said it is very lightweight and that is nice because it would be easy for me to carry around.

Let me ask you then...how is it for typing as I type super fast and even have trouble on my tiny laptop keypad. And also, do you find the screen is hard to see? I think those would be my two bggest concerns atm.

Date: 2012-03-27 10:47 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ranua.livejournal.com
The size of the keyboard does take some getting used to. You'll have to check out display models and see if that's a deal breaker.

As for the screen, mine is 10.5 inches, which is a bit less than I like to see on the vertical, I read fast, but really it's not bad. I'd say it's the same size as a portable dvd player screen.

Date: 2012-03-27 10:55 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ranua.livejournal.com
one more thing. (lol) looking up through the comments and saw you like to blow up the webpages to ease eye-strain, the net-book screen may be too small for that to not cut what you see significantly. I'd say go to best buy or something and play with the display models to be sure.

Date: 2012-03-27 08:48 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dodger-sister.livejournal.com
Thanks! I will have to try out the Netbook screen when I go to make a decision. At the moment, the easy visablity of the screen seems to be the only reason I might pass on the Netbook option.

A laptop is necessary sometimes.

And I think advertising for a sugar daddy would only be legal in Nevada. If it was legal in Texas I probably would have done it long ago.

When my dad or my sister buys me electronics and things, I always feel kind of guilty. A sugar-daddy would be nice because it would be a business transactionand I wouldn't have to feel bad for taking his money, like I do my family's. Plus, in my head, my sugar-daddy is really hot. ;)

Laptops are the best. I haven't even owned a desktop since... 2009. OK, I thought it was longer. My point is, laptops rule. Which I think I've said already. (I'm tired again. Triedness makes me write nonsense. ;))

I need a new laptop, too, actually. The screen on mine keeps going black, blinking on and off, and just generally make a fuzz. I think there's a glitch in one of the wires. Have to save money for that, then. Hopefully my tax return will help. (I think it's called a "tax return." Don't know how they work in the US, but if we've paid too much tax we get it back once a year. It's awesome.)

My desktop is fairly new - (two or three years old) - the laptop would just be an added bonus. My desktop has tons of storage space too, so I could use the laptop as an extra hard drive kind of, since I always worry about losing all my fics and stuff if my desktop ever crashes. So I could just back my documents up on a laptop, just in case.

Yep, we call that a 'tax reurn' too. It definitely sounds like you need a new laptop!

I'm going to echo the netbook recommendation. I have a work laptop I run graphics programs on, but my netbook has been great for virtually anything I want to do on the internet, includeing watching tv and movies. It is almost 5 years old and still runs great (though I am backing up all the data, just in case). I've been considering buying a tablet, but I'm not sure.

FYI mine is an Acer Aspire One. Don't know how it stacks up to others, but one thing you might look for is battery life. Mine was good for about a year then started draining quickly. When I began relying on the cord, that failed and the replacement one I purchased didn't last long. I ended up buying a universal cord which is bulkier, but has lasted a few years now. Otherwise, the Acer has given me no problems.

Thanks!

- Someone in the comments above said theirs has an 8-hour battery life and that is highly appealing to me.

Tablets - I heard they aren't very good for typing. Idk though since I've never used one.

Coincidentally, I went to a friend's yesterday and she told me that just that morning she had opened the iPad she had received for Christmas (clearly she wasn't motivated) and said that after two hours her head nearly exploded when she couldn't figure out how to import ebooks she had received from friends into any of the apps. I don't think she can, honestly -- I think they are set up to prevent that. Also she tried to do the *wireless* sync and found out that she had to buy a cable and attach the iPad to her computer to enable wireless sync.

Honestly, I thought she was going to snap it in half. Happily, she was able to get enough content on there to appease her, as the only reason she opened up the package was to take it on a week-long trip with her. After hearing all of that, it made me appreciate my netbook even more. :D

I actually asked around about IPads last year when my sister was looking at getting one and the majority of people seemed to think it wouldn't do what my sister needed. After the discussions about the IPad, I came to the conclusion they aren't worth the high cost.
