Just had to go reread Twitter Mania because this thread made me all nostalgic.

I guess it's because we want them to be awesome and amazing and stuff, and in the beginning we think the only way to get them to be like that is to make them perfect pod-people or something.

That is true. But we learn that characters can be endearingly loved by readers by having many layers and faults, by making the reader cheer for them and champion them.

What you need to remember is that you've spent years cultivating your literary tastes, so you should spend years cultivating your writing before you get to think it sucks.

Oooooh, your writing book has a good point. I had never thought of it like that before but that is really good advice for a first time writer.

Point is, everything is awesome and I just got back from ten days in the Swedish mountains.

That sounds lovely! Glad it was a good time.
