One, Two, Three.

One - My dad is having another surgery tomorrow on his leg. Last time I was uber-worried but I am a little more optimistic this time around. Still, in his health, it’s always a risk. Not the least of which because he hasn’t been taking care of himself the last month or so. They let him go home in between surgeries for some reason. This means that he hasn’t been following the diet they gave him - (on which he lost 50lbs!) - or taking his medicines properly - (he told me he lost track, while some of them he just didn’t want to take). My dad puts on a good show for people, so I don’t think they realize how little he actually takes care of himself. Tomorrow will tell, I suppose.
Two - In other surgery news, The Nephew had one the week of Thanksgiving. If you remember, he broke his arm last year. After they took the cast off, he had a cyst of fluid build-up, which the doctor said is not uncommon after wearing a cast. It wasn’t hurting him, so they decided to leave it. But I think The Nephew was always self-conscious of it and recently he told his dad that it was hurting him. Idk if it really was or if he was just self-conscious - (this came about right after school started back up) - but it was an outpatient procedure, so his parents decided to do it anyway. Thankfully, it all went fine. I called him the next day when he had the good pain meds and this conversation occurred.
Brother: Tell her what you are wearing at 3 in the afternoon.
The Nephew: My pajamas!
Me: What? Who are you…me?
TN: I know!
Me: Are you going to wear them to Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow?
TN: NO!
Me: You don’t think Mommy would let you get away with that?
TN: NO!
Me: That’s too bad because I wanted to wear my pajamas to dinner at Grandma’s house tomorrow. I was just going to tell her that you were doing it, so I should get to do it too.
TN: OKAY! That’s a plan! Let’s do it!
I love that kid.
Three - The Walking Dead midseason finale…I think that may have been the most tension filled episode of TV that I have ever seen in my life. At one point, when Michonne and The Governor were fighting, I yelled, “Grab a piece of glass and stab him in the eye!” And then…SHE DID! Not just grabbing the glass but stabbing him in the eye too! (Naturally, with only a piece of glass as your weapon, it is common sense that the eye is the place to go for). My sis and I had both been extremely tense during the episode, there had been a lot of hand-flapping, but when the eye-stabbing occurred…my sister fucking SCREAMED. I have watched a lot of scary movies with her and I have never heard her scream like that. It was kind of awesome. This fucking show, man. I can’t believe we have to wait until February for more.

OMG LAST NIGHT, LAST NIGHT! This season has been OUTSTANDING. And of course there's another commentary.

Date: 2012-12-06 09:18 pm (UTC)Dad's surgery went pretty well. He seems way more coherent after this one than he did after the last one (where he was cussing at all the nurses and throwing things at people), so that is a good sign that his health is doing better. There has been some problems with his oxygen levels, which is why I have refrained from posting thus far (don't want to jinx it by declaring everything went well until they know why his oxygen levels have dropepd so much), but hopefully I'll have an answer on that in a few hours.
IKR?! How has TWD just risen to like this crazy level of every episode just being so damn fucking good? It's insane! February is going to be full of so many good things!

Date: 2012-12-07 01:47 am (UTC)That's great to hear. I know it has to be so stressful, not just for him, but for everyone in the family, every time he has to go in for surgery. Keeping my fingers crossed over here.
I KNOW RIGHT? It's the most-watched 18-49 drama on ALL the channels now... not just stacked up against cable shows, but ALL CHANNELS. First time ever for a cable drama, so I'm thinking we'll get to enjoy crazy Walker-bai antics for years to come!

Date: 2012-12-16 09:30 pm (UTC)No, no, I'm with you on that! 100% percent! It deserved far more than it ever got from anyone - (except the fans who adore it and the cast who seemed geniunely heartbroken to lose it). I often wonder though, if Joss had been allowed to continue on with Firefly, if we would still hold it in such high regard. Like if he had two seasons for it, it may still be as fantastic of a show as we got. But if they had gone for five or six seasons...would it have maintained itself or would he have inevitably fucked it up?
Still, it deserved more than 13 episodes that they didn't even air all of them and when they did they aired them out of order and bumped it around from night to night and...erghughgrumble.
Yep.

Date: 2012-12-17 02:37 am (UTC)I loved season 6 of Buffy. S7 had its moments but it was rather slow-going. They would have done better, I think, to make S7 a half-season, 13 eps. That way they could wrap it up how they wanted, without dragging it out with a lot of nothing happening. But even that season had one of my favorite moments in it.
Season 4 of Angel had its moments as well, but that whole Cordelia/Gina Torres thing, ugh, I could have skipped all of that. But S5 was one of my favorite seasons. (the first of Angel I ever saw was a S5 ep and I thought that was what the whole show was going to be like - that scene where Spike is the only one who shows up to the boardroom meeting and he has chips and a beer in his briefcase and Angel is all FML!)
But I hold Firefly above either Buffy or Angel and maintianing such a high level of expectations would be a challenge, even for Joss.
Dollhouse actually maintained itself very well, and left me wanting more, but it only lasted two seasons, which worked out well for it, I guess.

Same goes, and I agree - but you know, with that cast and the magical awesomeness that made them so close and such a great ensemble, he might just have been able to pull it off.
If only we could have Firefly and Castle at the same time....

Date: 2012-12-06 09:20 pm (UTC)Thanks! Dad's surgery went well, though they haven't moved him from the surgery ward yet. He seems much more alert than after the last one, which is a good sign.
The Nephew was so enthuastic about our pajama idea - it was adorable!

Date: 2012-12-04 03:31 am (UTC)During that whole scene I was yelling at Michonne to freaking stab him. Why the hell she was trying to *strangle* him with the sword was beyond me. I don't like the Governor character in particular, but you have to give him props to creating that whole town and getting everyone to work together. Rick's major problem, as you recall, was struggling to make everyone listen to him. The Governor accomplished that tenfold, including people with families. So even though he's a crazy Zombie Fight Club and Baby!Zombie and Bowl!Head guy, he did some shit right. Merle they can throw out to the walkers for all I care. The episode in Season 1 when he was introduced was the one I was thiiiiis close to giving up on the show because it was like, insert stereotypical white trash redneck guy here. Boring! Happily he only lasted until Rick stuck him on the roof so I was okay with it.
Also, LOL at your sister. She sounds like my girlfriend, who screeches and yelps at anything like that or anything jumping out on screen. Not that she'll watch The Walking Dead! No way.
Nice to see Cutty from The Wire coming to play. He was the guy who came into the prison with his group.

Heat of the moment, I suppose, but I was thinking the same damn thing!
I think the Governor has had some kind of mental breakdown or lack of understanding about the zombies, but he does take care of his people good. He's a really good side-by-side with Rick, in that it showcases the whole question of 'how far do you go to protect your people?'. Because, yes, Rick had that problem in the past, not willing to make the hard choices (something that Shane was actually good at), to recognize the way the world is now - and now we have New!Rick who is more hardcore and willing to make the tough call but he has lost so much of himself in the process. The Governor makes for an interesting 'this is where Rick may be someday' comparision.
The episode in Season 1 when he was introduced was the one I was thiiiiis close to giving up on the show because it was like, insert stereotypical white trash redneck guy here.
You know though, I think they counteract it with Daryl - because yes, stereotypical redneck in Merle and that is exactly what you expected to get with Daryl too, but you didn't. You get something so much more than that and that too is an interesting comparision. Knowing what we know about Daryl and Merle's childhood, you kind of wonder how they each would have turned out if Daryl had been the older brother and Merle the little brother. I suspect Merle is on his way out though and probably at Daryl's hands.
Also, LOL at your sister. She sounds like my girlfriend, who screeches and yelps at anything like that or anything jumping out on screen.
That's the thing though - my sister never screams like that. I have watched some terrifying shit with her before (28 Days Later, 30 Days of Night - both of which terrify the shit out of me) and she has never made that noise in her life. Which just proves the show really hits its mark. So, I guess The GF won't be watching any Paranormal Witness with us ever, huh?
Nice to see Cutty from The Wire coming to play. He was the guy who came into the prison with his group.
Apparently that character is from the comics. I never watched The Wire (we don't get HBO) but The BFF was a HUGE fan of that show, so I bet she recognized him.

Date: 2012-12-04 05:02 pm (UTC)You make me wish I could get past the severe "yuck" factor in TWD. That sounds like an awesome, if horrific, scene!

Date: 2012-12-06 09:43 pm (UTC)The Nephew was limited on using his right arm for a few weeks, especially lifting things, which is hard to get a 6 year old to remember! But he is pretty much all healed up now and back to climbing on everyone like a jungle gym. :)
Oh, yeah, I would say 'no' on the The Walking Dead for you. I have to cover my face often enough from the yuck factor in that show and I don't get squicked that easily. But it was an amazing fight for damn sure - I mean, a piece of glass in his eye!
So, if you don't like yuck and gore and stuff, are you watching Ian McShane in this season of American Horror Story? I am not, because too many 'experiments' on the patients for me to handle but I am sad to be missing the awesome cast they lined up for this season. Just curious. (btw, your icon both makes me smile and frightens me a little, lol)

Date: 2012-12-06 09:46 pm (UTC)LOL Yeah, they don't even get Christmas cards from me. To be fair, The Nephew does get a present though - this year I am getting him all the Marvel animated movies, only partially so I can borrow them!

Date: 2012-12-06 09:55 pm (UTC)The Nephew just had a little trouble remembering not to lift anything with his right hand for a while, but he is all recovered and back to being a rambunctious 6 year old again!
I feel like I am so behind on LJ, trying to get some Christmas projects done, but I wondered if you have been feeling better. I know you were pretty sick there for awhile. Hope things are going better!
