Get On The Floor, Floor.

I just watched this last week’s SYTYCD. I have kind of mixed feelings on the Tucker vs. Nico thing. While I think Nico is adorable and talented, I have been rooting for Tucker, in part because his story speaks so much to me. I mean, he was in a terrible accident and the doctors told him he would actually never even walk again and yet here he is competing on a hardcore dance show. But that said…I feel like Nico did an amazing performance and piece of entertainment in this episode with the spiderweb routine and the only reason Tucker got the spot is because of the personal emotions behind his routine. I mean, yes, his routine was stunning and I was totally crying over it - for both Travis Wall’s personal history in it, as well as Tucker and Robert’s - and lord knows, I love when Robert comes back and when they have two guys dance contemporary together, because yes, sometimes I watch this show with my slash goggles on. But it just seems a bit unfair because the emotional pieces always win out over the entertainment pieces and Nico didn’t really stand much of a chance. I’d also like to point out how my two favorite guys; Fik-shun, an adorable little hip-hop dancer that I called out as early as the auditions as making it into the top ten and Aaron, a tap-dancer with killer arms who only made it in after somebody else got injured, and one of my two favorite girls, Jasmine, a contemporary dancer with fire in her legs, are still in this thing!!
On a side note…NEIL! He’s lost that baby-face and his body has filled out and wow. If it weren’t for his unmistakable legs/feet combo, idk if I would have recognized him. Neil is basically the reason I watch the show. I was flipping the channels one day and I came across SYTYCD, third season, never even heard of this show before and Neil was performing and fuck, I couldn’t take my eyes off him. Completely enraptured. After that, I started watching regularly, cheering for Neil the whole way. You know, I never really had a barefoot kink in my life, but Neil - his legs are always so straight, his lines are gorgeous, his feet are always perfectly pointed and he almost always dances in barefeet and fuck, by the end of Season 3 - barefoot-kink all over the place. I had forgotten all this until I saw him dance in this latest episode and was re-kink-itized all over again. They are simply gorgeous feet, okay!
The Neil performance that got me into the show!!
Neil dancing with Kent Boyd - who a) went on to be featured in Bunheads and b) apparently went to school with my new PT Assistant. You can’t even know the flailing that went on over that last one.
And for fun, Fik-shun dancing with my favorite girl of all time, Melanie!
In sum: I just had to recharge my IPad keyboard for the first time since I got the IPad in like February - that’s an impressive battery life!

Date: 2013-08-21 07:27 pm (UTC)I really adore the second one though. They both just threw their emotions into it. Plus, seriously, they have so many damn 'love story' routines on this show - I get kind of bored of it, me and my cynical heart - so it was nice to see it mixed up a little.
As for the first one - now after years of watching this show, I can recognize that it was, while certainly Great, not like 'omg the best one I've ever seen', but it still gets to me because it was the first SYTYCD routine I ever saw and also I know Mia Michels choreographed it right after her father died and she was crying her eyes out at the end of the routine which always gets to me too. But certainly not Neil's best performance by far.
BTW, while we are on the subject of dance - Drama-Queen Dude on Breaking Pointe got the contract. The other dude who didn't get the contract was totally gracious about the whole thing, which just made it that much worse! It was sweet when Drama-Queen Dude found out and then went into the lobby and to hug his fiancée though, because it really would have upended their lives to have to move - and the fiancée is a nice enough guy to be of the mindset of 'If you have to find another job some place else, then I have to find another job some place else too,' but damn, that guy was totally obnoxious and I feel like he'll never learn anything about maturity if he always gets what he wants. (he goofs off in the back of class while everyone else is trying to learn their routines - seriously how did he get this far without a teacher busting his ass for that shit?)

Tell me when they get into the good rehearsal shows, okay? :)

Date: 2013-08-28 12:28 am (UTC)It was his best performance all season! I think until now he has kind of coasted on his winning personality, because while he is AMAZING at the styles for a hip-hop dancer with no other sort of training, he isn't as good at a lot of the stuff as some of the more trained dancers. But everyone loves him because he is adorable and sweet and has so much enthusiasm (which anyone will tell you, counts a LOT in dance). And now that they were down to the bottom 8 dancers or so, you start to get people in the bottom that really don't do deserve to be there - but you know, someone has to be! That said, that dance was astounding and he should NOT have been in the bottom. Tonight they send home their last two and then we are down to the Final Finals, so I cross fingers now. Three of my four favs are still in this!

No. Adam - the head of the company - does not roll like that. He doesn't do pretend-drama for the sake of the cameras. I honestly think he picked Drama kid because the other dude he was up against tends to get really frustrated when he makes a mistake and lose his cool, while Drama kid just brushes it off (though maybe Adam doesn't realize that is because Drama kid doesn't take his dancing as seriously?) and also because I think Adam felt like he needed a dancer he wasn't tall and skinny, to fill those parts in the ballets that are for less conventional characters (like the kid is playing the court jester in Cinderella). That's my take on it.
Tell me when they get into the good rehearsal shows, okay? :)
They are through with casting and contracts, so it's probably rehearsals and performances from here on out.
I know how to spell things!

Date: 2013-08-28 02:09 am (UTC)I can see Drama-ho being a good comic relief sort of guy in ballets... but what do you bet he'll start fussing about being typecast, sooner or later? :P I'll try to catch some of the upcoming episodes.

Date: 2013-08-19 01:45 am (UTC)It screens here on a Friday and we are several episodes behind you guys.
I was so pleased to see that Fik Shun in the Top Ten and more importantly dancing up veritibal storm with Melanie (another fav dancer).
I hadn't seen the two vids that you posted of the guys dancing together or the summertime dance with the flowers (did you pull those from the current Season of SYTYCD?)
thanks for posting these vids, I got goosebumps watching fikshun and melanie.
Cheers :)

It screens here on a Friday and we are several episodes behind you guys.
Then I will keep my mouth shut about this week's ep but omg, we are so down to the wire here and having to send home people who don't even deserve it because they are all awesome!

Fik-shun (and Melanie for that matter) is a dancer that I saw in the auditions and started rooting for right then because I loved him immediately. He may not be the overall best dancer on the show, but I have never seen a hip hop dancer take on all of the different styles with such grace and determination and he can pull them all off beautifully. If only he could remember to point his toes! I just adore him! 8)

The flower-dance was from S3 and was the first thing of SYTYCD that I ever saw. Neil has been one of my favorites (and an often recurring Allstar ever since then). The second one with the two guys was from S7 and had Neil dancing as an Allstar with one of my two top fav guys from that season, Kent Boyd! I was so proud of SYTYCD for letting them dance a love story routine together.

They are just wonderful together, aren't they?! You're very welcome!
