Gladiating Teenage Boys.

My sister is sick with the sinus/cough/fever thing. She is the last in the house to have it. First The BFF had it really nasty and then I had it less so and now my sister has it somewhere in between our levels of severity. Still, she insists she will go to work in the morning. I'm betting she won't. This did mean that we caught up on all the TV this weekend though. I myself am still kind of gross and I can't stop sneezing, but definitely better than I was last weekend.
Anyways, I have lots of things to tell you guys, as this weekend was very busy. But it's late and I'm tired, so let me just tell you about the dream I had a couple of nights ago, before I forget it.
So my dream was set in a futuristic world where everyone was starving to death. In it, a teenage Joshua Jackson and a teenage Elijah Wood lived together in this shoebox of an apartment (it all looked very Terra Nova the pilot episode). They decide they are going to volunteer for The Gladiator Games. If you win The Games, the government takes care of you for life. But even if you die, your family gets death benefits from the government. So they go down to see the doctor for their medical exam (yes, in my dream Josh and Elijah were having medical exams, in the same room as each other even) so that they can be deemed worthy of volunteering.
The doctors were telling them all the things they would have to do in The Games; fight large groups of gladiators, fight giant troll guys, get chained up and escape from said chains before a lion eats their faces. For one of the medical procedures, they strapped Elijah down to a gurney and he had this major panic attack and said he couldn't do it. He realized he would never survive the round with the chains and the lions if he gets that freaked about being tied down (yes, this is my brain).
He is freaking out and he tells Josh that he can't do it. Josh is really upset and he tells Elijah that he has too, that Josh's family is starving and even if he dies, he has to do this. Elijah gets all upset and runs out of the doctor's office. Josh goes to say goodbye to his family. He tells them that now they will all be taken care of and even if he dies, it'll be worth it. Then he begs them to make sure that Elijah is taken care of too.
Josh: I should have married him when I had the chance.
Family Member: You aren't gay.
Josh: Doesn't matter. He is my best friend and I love him and if I had married him, he'd be eligible for my death benefits.
(yes, apparently in my apocalyptic future, gay marriage is legal - yay apocalyptic future!)
Then Josh tells them, "You have to promise you'll take care of him. He can't make the rent. You have to promise me. I can't let him go back to whoring himself."
Yes, I said whoring himself. Apparently that was enough of a jolt to wake me up, because I woke up then.
Sometimes I wish my dreams could be captured on video so you all could see them. This one was very vivid and the future-world looked really awesome.
Off to bed now - hopefully to have more dreams that include Joshua Jackson sacrificing himself so Elijah Wood won't have to be a prostitute.

Date: 2012-03-01 11:44 am (UTC)I think it's from a book of short stories. It's this big deal race for teens and the winner gets like his hearts desire or something. The catch is they can not stop for any reason until they reach the finish line. No stopping to sleep or potty breaks or anything, every thing must be done on the move and if they do stop they can be killed by the race moderators. It comes down to two boys, the pov character and the unsuitable boy. It gets really intense at the end with the pov character winning, but not realizing it because he's so focused on staying just that one step ahead of the other boy who has actually died. It's that wonderful creepy ambiguous King ending.
