This Post May Have A Theme, But I Can't Figure What It Is.

Last night’s Hawaii Five-O was like a fanfic come to life. Normally, with most shows, I would be like, “Are you seriously trolling fandom looking for ideas for your show?” but let’s face it, logic and realism are not things I look for on H5O. In fact, the more fanfic tropes they fit into an episode, the more I like it. Also, the more Kono kicks people in their faces, the more I like it. So last night’s episode was quite awesome, thank you very much.

In movie news - I recently watched Nanny McPhee and it was cute and fun. I have always liked Colin Firth and that adorable stuttering thing he does so well. Angela Lansbury was a riot as the great-aunt and I will watch anything Thomas Sangster does - that kid is a pro. I also have a soft spot for hordes of cute kids with British accents. The movie itself was fun and funny and had this great look to it where you could tell it was based on a children’s storybook. The coloring from the sets to the clothes all gave it this ‘book come to life’ feel. I watched some of the behind-the-scenes, and besides Colin Firth dressed up in the Nanny McPhee outfit (it was hysterical), I was also quite interested in the story of how the books came to be. The author, who was a crime novelist back in the 60s, her great-grandfather had a passel of children and to keep them in line, he made up stories about Nurse Matilda, who used magic to temper unruly children. The stories stuck with the children and they ended up telling it to their own kids and so forth. Until the author of the books and her children’s book illustrator cousin decided to immortalize them into a series of children's books - books which Emma Thompson was a fan of and thus turned into the screenplay, Nanny McPhee. It was quite interesting.

The movie though gave me several fanfic ideas.

*Castiel is a rich widower with several children. Dean is the groundskeeper. Sam is the tutor. Castiel and Dean fall madly in love.
*John is a widower. Dean is 18, Sam is 14 and Castiel is Sam’s 22 year old tutor. Dean and Castiel fall madly in love.
*Jensen is a rich widower with a bunch of children. Misha is the manny who tames them using magic. Jensen and Misha fall madly in love.

I’m sensing a theme here. Someone get on writing those for me immediately,. Thank you.

In final news, I just found out Misha & Vicki had a daughter a few weeks ago!! How come I didn’t know this? The internets has failed me! Well, it would help if I was paying attention to anything on the internets besides baseball standings but whatever. I am very happy for them!! They have an adorable family.

I really, really enjoyed Nanny McPhee but I had chalked that up to my epic love for Colin Firth AND for Emma Thompson. I'm kind of glad to see I'm not the only adult to have loved it so much ;-)

Oh, I adore Emma Thompson. Her scene in Love Actually when she goes into the bedroom and cries - man, I can't even listen to that song anymore without crying. That woman is superb.

You know they have all the cutesy kids family movies these days and most of the time I can't stand them, but I loved Nanny McPhee - it was very entertaining.

I watched Nanny McPhee a year or so ago and posted about it because I took issue with the fact that as the kids behaved and her ugliness went away, she got thinner as well. I'm not sure what that is telling viewers, frankly. That I should equate being ugly with also being fat? That to show her true form of beauty she must also be thin? It bothered me and still does.

It was you! I remembered while I was making this post that there was someone on my Flist who had that complaint, but it was so long ago, I couldn't remember who.

I didn't really look at it that way - I looked at it as more of a way for children to be able to tell the progression of the story - each disappearing body mark being another lesson learned. I didn't notice that she got thinner - I didn't actually notice that she was even fat to begin with, I thought she was just wearing weird old fashioned clothes.

I have just watched a lot of cutesy kid movies in my day (especially when I was working) and most of them are unbearable to watch. But I found Nanny McPhee to be fun and charming.

I haven't watched the new H5-0 yet, but just from the previews I can tell it's basically the source material stealing from fanfic. I'm so excited! :D

I've never even heard of Nanny McPhee, but it sounds adorable. The story behind the story is very cool too. And yes, those fanfics need to be written like now. :)

When I saw the preview for the Hawaii Five-O ep, I thought it looked like something straight out of fanfic. I had NO idea what was to come. It's everything you think it will be and more - including Danny sharing heartfelt stories of his past with Steve in a way that I swear I have read in a fic before. There is even a fanfic scene in there for the Chin/Kono shippers. It was crazy. You have to watch it!

We should email them the link to the H50 AO3 section! lol Except I think maybe they already have it.

Nanny McPhee is totally fun and endearing. It's Emma Thompson in the lead role and a bunch of very good kids (most of whom were not professionals when they did this movie) as Colin Firth's children. It's just well shot and edited and acted and it really feels like watching a storybook come to life. And I think it is funny for kids too because Nanny McPhee uses magic to make crazy things happen like a dancing donkey - kids love that stuff.

Ok, I've watched H50 now and yep, that was a fanfic if I ever read one. :D A well done fanfic, with half-naked, wet, snarky heroes. All good fic should come with such visuals.

I'm sure I've read or actually I thought it was in the show itself, Danny sharing a story of how when he was younger an out-of-control teen driver ran over his best friend and it would have been him too if he hadn't stopped to tie his shoe.

Haven't we been saying from the beginning that it seems the writers have their fingers on the pulse of fanfic and are cherry picking the good stuff? As long as they keep mining the tropes and doing them well, I for one will keep tuning it. Also, they're getting Scott Cann to take off more clothes all the time (on the boat with just the one button done holding his shirt barely across his chest and his hip bones showing *drools*) and that can only be a good thing! :P

Ha! Now that you say that, I can't remember if that did happen on the show or not. H50 is the worst show of all for me to get confused with fics because the show itself just feels like one giant fanfic. And often the more realistic things happen in the fic than on the show. I swear I read a fic once where Danny said he had a fear of drowning because he almost drown/or he saw someone drown once.

We have been saying that. I kind of knew going into the show at the start that it would be one big handwavey fanfic. It's why I watch, after all.

YES! My god, why was the one button thing so damned good? It was though.

As you saw from the previews, this week's episode had Steve's mom and though I am tired as shit of the Wo Fat storyline, there was something unbelievably cute about Steve constantly being like, "Okay but Mom...Mom, just..Mom..." Also, I friend-ship Kono/Danny!
