I have not even posted about it yet, but in April, just a few weeks ago, I got to go to Disney’s annual blowout Star Wars Celebration convention. It was pretty expensive for any autographs & photo ops, so aside from the group photo w my girls & Greg Grunberg, I selected just one person to meet. And it was Peter Mayhew, the original Chewbacca himself. And I am so glad I did. Because Peter Mayhew has passed away.

He had had a stroke or something, before, it seemed like. But he seemed so pleased to be there, goofing it up for the cameras, intently listening to his fans tell him what he & Chewbacca mean to them, messing around with the Chewie replica head they set out on his table. I hope he was glad to have gotten to participate in one last celebration of an icon. *I* am sure glad he was able to be there. It fulfilled a lifetime dream of mine, to meet him.

Star Wars was the beginning of a world of imagination & possibilities for me. It showed me the stars. It taught me loyalty & friendship & courage & hope. And at the center of that, drawing me in, was my first love, Chewbacca. I was gonna marry him, you know. I was five - I thought marriage would be holding his furry hand while we walked, laying on him like a warm fuzzy mattress & blankie all in one, and having him carry me around when my knees hurt. In hindsight, I think I had a pretty good grasp on what marriage should be. And to meet the man behind my Chewie? Well, that was truly amazing. It’s a bittersweet thing I’m feeling.

The stars will shine a little brighter tonight, now that Peter has joined Carrie in lighting up the galaxy. The one here and the one far, far away.

From my FB re the dog’s name: “Well, you people were no help! FB & Journal overwhelmingly said Hitch. Twitter & Tumblr went with Diggle. Everyone at physical therapy was split 50/50 too. However...the name Diggle was for a Green Arrow character. And the comic book writer for whom the character was named? Saw my convo on Twitter, jumped in & asked if he could vote. Obvs he voted for Diggle! So since the namesake himself wants Diggle, we are going with Diggle. (I was leaning that way anyways, but this sealed it!)”

Seriously, you guys, Andy Diggle, who writes Green Arrow & The Losers, to name a few, and who actually has a brother named John, and for whom the Diggle brothers in the Arrow verse are named for? He not only voted on my dog’s name, but has been back in my mentions looking at the dog’s pics & saying, “Give him a scritch for me!” And yes, I’m the girl that decides a dog name on nothing less!

Pics under the cut. )

And today, on my pro page: “The Westword Books family - or in this case, the author & editor, who live together 😉 - are happy to welcome a new rescue to their home. Say hello to Diggle, aka Wiggle Diggle, (seen here with our author & on his first day in his new home).

He’s a 3 year old rescue, who traveled from a shelter in Texas to a rescue home in Michigan, before finding his way to the Westword Books family. Diggle, previously known as Hitch, was picked up as a stray with an injured back leg, that has thankfully *mostly* healed up. He was instantly recognized as adoptable, a cuddler & a kisser. He’s a bulldog/daschund/something, with a love for cats, dogs & kids. Perfect for a busy household with lots of guests, like this one. And yes, he is named for John Diggle of Green Arrow and his naming was blessed by John’s namesake, Mr. Andrew Diggle, comic book writer extraordinaire.

Thank you to Animal Aid of Branch County for helping unite us with the newest love of our lives! Welcome to your furever home & family, Diggle! We love you already!“

My new pupper, you guys! If you’re on Twitter or Tumblr, the hashtag will be DiggleTheDog!

We are getting a new dog! We started looking about a month ago - 6 months after Winston passed. The first dog we liked was a beagle, which I’ve always wanted. But he has seizures and while we were willing to take on a special needs dog, he would have needed an injection right during his seizures, something I am physically unable to do while Sis is at work. So that was Monty & after much discussion with his foster mom, Monty was decided against. Then we looked at another beagle named Phoebe, but she was spoken for. Then we looked at a pug/terrier I believe it was, but she was 8yrs old and a dog of that size would likely only live to 12, putting her at an age where she’d be passing in another 4yrs or so, around the same time we expect Pippin & Kirk to go :(. (They are 10 yrs old now, can you believe it!). All of our previous cats lived to be 13-15yrs old and we didn’t relish the thought of losing 2 cats *and* a dog within a few years of each other. So Charlie was out.

And then we met Hitch. And we actually *met* Hitch, his foster mom brought him for a visit. This is him. We knew right away we wanted him. Pippin & Ripley were both stoked to see a dog again. Kirk, as always, was indifferent. Hiccup was pissed - he is the baby, after all! We decided that day to get him and just had to wait for the new fence to get finished out back. We only had to wait two weeks but it seems like forever.

And now we get him on Saturday! He's a 3yr old rescue, 20lbs, slight limp, possible bulldog/chihuahua/dachshundmaybe/something, came to a MI rescue from TX. Hitch is his current name, he's had it for 6 months, but I not 100% on it, nor a 100% on making him learn a new name. They have no info about his life before the TX rescue, including a name. So the rescue gave him the name Hitch for his injured back leg. But the leg is mostly healed now and I’m just not keen on Hitch bc it always makes me think of that Kevin James/Will Smith movie. Ofc I’ve also been calling him Hitch for 2 weeks now, so idk maybe that’s his name. Here are some name choices, whaddya think?

Tripp

Posted this on FB today for National Sibling Day! That’s me with the bowl cut. It was 1986, don’t judge me! You could see what country kids we were - we came from farmers, after all. And that was our family dog, Mackinaw. He was a St Bernard mixed with a Siberian Husky - a Saint Husky, if you will. He was my little brother’s best friend. And see those stairs? There was a dirt hill leading up to our clubhouse & swing set in the backyard, and with my bad knees it was so hard for me as a little one to climb that hill - so Dad built me these steps, railing & all.

Just a glimpse into my childhood right here. I still love my siblings, they even irritate me a bit less than they did growing up! ;)

Happy National Sibling Day! Any of you got pics with your siblings?

A week ago today I was on spring break with Sis & our friend [personal profile] hiyacynth, + her son Munchy P (8), & The Niece (6) & Nephew (nearly 13)...at Great Wolf Lodge in Sandusky, OH. I give GWL double thumbs up on both accessiblity & entertainment.

Once you are there, no reason to ever leave the resort the whole stay. The indoor water park has a pool, hot tubs for adults & kids, lily pad obstacle, clubhouse, gadget sprays that come on with pullies & levers, plus multiple water slides. Kept the kids entertained all day. The Niece insisted I “follow her!” so The Nephew pushed my wheelchair behind her while she pulled every lever to spray us! Also I definitely did the 700 gallon bucket dump. And I definitely screamed my whole way through it. And then I definitely got into the hot tub after that.

So all in all, a great spring break with some of my fav peeps.

Code Black is leaving Netflix on Monday, April 1, here in the U.S. & if you can watch it before then, you should. It’s a documentary about emergency medicine, emergency room doctors, a new generation of doctors, county hospitals & how they’re run & how they’re funded, the healthcare system in America, and how doctors in emergency rooms - and even more specifically *county hospital emergency room* doctors - feel about the healthcare system in America. I didn’t agree with everything they had to say, but I found it all fascinating, especially as a person who’s been the patient on the other end multiple times. These doctors basically think nothing - lack of insurance, hospital overhead, staffing, regulations - should get in the way of patient care ... and that I did agree with.

Also of note, the cute blond doc in the film is actually the director as well. He wanted to highlight the struggles of the healthcare system in a place like LA County hospital, so he made a movie. It was executive produced by Marti Noxon, so we can thank her for helping this film see the light of day.

In sum: Code Black, the documentary, available on Netflix until April 1. Go watch it.

Just got back from seeing The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part. Usually no way a sequel is as good as the original, but this one I would say is like 90% as good, that’s my official review number, 90%. And only loses those 10% bc the first had that reveal & going into the 2nd one you already know the reveal, so there’s nothing left to reveal. But it was awesome. Not awesome all of the time, that’s a completely unrealistic expectation. (See the movie, you’ll get that joke.). Also they give mad props to my girl, Wyldstyle (yes I wore my Wyldstyle tee to the movie, as you see in this selfie. Yes it’s actually a pajama shirt & yes it has holes in it, but no, I don’t care.). Also, Tiffany Haddish - girl, I’d marry you, you slay.

👍🏼👍🏼 do recommend for all ages of fun!

I keep trying not to interject (Self) Published Author when I say it, bc fuck it, I worked my ass off, I don’t need no qualifiers! Ya’ll my book is out in paperback! MY BOOK, MINE! I did it, I’m an author. Omg. I’m stuck alternating between running around screaming excitedly at top of my lungs and flopping down boneless & relieved of all cares in the world. And bonus, now I can focus on other things for a change, like disability blogging more, art projects, answering journal comments lol, and idk, writing my next book. Anyways, here’s the write up for those of you *not* following my professional FB - why aren’t you? It’s Westword Books on FB, go Follow! - ...

‪Ya’ll, look what [personal profile] ceitfianna sent me! My own Chewie, my first childhood crush. This guy is quite possibly as snuggly as the real deal. I love him!

What a surprise to get a package in the mail & find him inside! Now to decide, do I tuck him under my head for maximum squishiness, prop my arm around him for cuddles, or be the little spoon in the relationship while allowing him to support my back? Decisions, decisions.

Thanks, K, he’s the best & so are you!

Hey, gang! Just want to take a moment to promote my book, "Terrific Tails: Stories From A Pet Guardian", a project I’ve been working on for over 3 years. It is currently out in ebook format and will be out before the end of this month in paperback. And it’s not just this book either! There will be another book after this and one after that. Hopefully I can make a whole life long thing out of this! So, please, go to my professional Facebook page, “Westword Books”, and see what we – it’s become a family affair! – have to offer. All profits will go to various charities, so it’s for good causes too.

The first book is all about my family pets & there are adorable pictures included! Support a first-time author, good charities and a fun family project done all in my Grandma Ava’s memory - and at her insistence too, which is a whole story you can read about in the book! We also have a Twitter account, so follow us wherever you like. Three years worth of hard work is finally paying off – come see what we’ve got to show you!

Today is my 9th year sober.

Nine years ago today I made it through my first 24 hours drug-free.

That’s nine years of family. Nine years of watching my niblings grow and become whole people. Nine years that added three more niblings to my family. Nine years of shaping them & loving them. Nine years of new friends. Nine years of reconnecting with old friends. Nine years of true friendship. Nine years of creating art. Nine years of words that wouldn’t have been written. Nine years that brought my first published book. Nine years of vacations & parties & conventions & hang outs. Nine years that brought two tattoos. Nine years of helping people navigate the world of disability. Nine years of fighting for social justice. Nine years of blogging & connecting to the world at large. Nine years of tv & movies & books & fic I never would’ve discovered. Nine years of loving my fur babies. Nine years that added two more fur babies to my life. Nine years of pain, sure, but also nine years of gains. Nine years of memories. Nine years of love. Nine years of life.

Today is nine years.

Finally watched Dumplin on Netflix and...damn.. Whole last quarter ending of the movie was a roller coaster of my emotions. Even so, like 10 minutes before the end, I thought, “Well this has been a great movie, but idk why everyone on the internet was crying.” Not 2 minutes later the *thing* happened & I was bawling my eyes out. I can’t even, bc my emotions, okay? 10/10 would recommend. Also, daaamn, Harold Perrineau!

‪Closing out the year the same way I spent about 50% of it...yep, I’m in bed already at not quite 9pm. Got up for a dr appt at 8:30am, which most of you know is 4 hours too early for me. Then spent all morning being poked & prodded by drs & techs, so I just came home after, slept, canceled physical therapy, watched Sharknado 5 instead. Now I’m ready for bed. Gonna close out the year with Seth Cohen’s favorite Sylvester Stallone movie, Over The Top, and then go to sleep before midnight. I’m not lame, I’m 40, people.

Also, fyi, I saw someone say “They say what u do at midnight is how you'll spend the new yr”.
I’m legit gonna be asleep w Law & Order: SVU on in the background so, yep, this seems accurate.
Statement now verified by science!

Goodnight & Happy New Year, ya’ll!‬

Unfortunately I can’t post the pictures that go with this story here - I did post them on Facebook because the niblings parents allow that, but I don’t post their pics here because they don’t know any of you & my brother is understandably cautious. My rule has always been no pics of anyone without their - or their parents’ - permission. But I wanted to share the story, because I am so proud of The Nephew (12 now) & Niece (almost 6).

This weekend we had special family fun time at the arcade! Our local bowling alley has a new arcade, about 30 games or so, pretty cool. We had the kids for a few days over Christmas break, so we took them and we all had fun! Here’s the best story though...

I’m exhausted after 3 straight days of kids up in here, followed by a D&D gaming session over Skype with The Canadians, but it was a great week. Tomorrow I have a string of dr appointments, but Tuesday I finally will get to rest, lol.

‪Into The SpiderVerse is...beyond words. A perfect final project for Mr. Stan Lee to go out on. It made my little 7 year old Spidey fangirl heart come alive. My Feels, you guys. My Feels.

Also, if you can see it in 3D, do so. It wasn’t showing in 3D anywhere even kinda close to around here, so we couldn’t, but now I wish we’d at least made the 30 minute drive to the theater with the huge ass screen. The animation, the effects, the swinging through the air - the bigger the screen, the better.

You will also spend much of the movie being driven up the wall trying to place all the voice actors. *Everyone* does a voice in this. Plus, great soundtrack, truly.

So many amazing Spideys. A Stan Lee cameo - “He and I were friends, you know.” I had to bite down to keep from sobbing out loud, “We know you were, Stan. We know you were.”

And yes, stay to the very, very end.

This movie.

So, post-surgery, the first 24 hours home are awful. So much pain, can’t sleep, can barely move on my own. Well, because in the hospital I was on 75mg of Oxy - yes, Oxy. I know, a dangerous road for me. “Use it, don’t abuse it,” I keep saying to myself - and yet they only sent me home with 150mg to last 10 days until I see the dr. How could I make that last? So I wasn’t allowing myself enough & it was sending me on a path that would lead right back to the hospital. My arthritis pain alone just from being 95% bed-bound for 4 days was off the charts. So I came home the day after Thanksgiving & by Saturday night, I gave in & called the on-call line. I luckily got a resident dr who saw me in the hospital & was like, “No, no, take whatever you need, we will get you more. We got you on this.” So glad he recognized that one size fits all does not fit *me*.

Under the cut for spaceage. )

So yeah, a few rough days to start, some nerve issues I could live without, losing stamina from being bed-bound, and some worry over my liver - but the hip itself...Doing great! Strength coming back, mobility increasing, wound healing over nicely. I have pics of my leg with the staples in and then an after-shot of when they were taken out - if anyone’s interested, it’s gross but cool, I could post the pics, they were a huge hit with the niblings. Currently the biggest issue is that I’m feeling well enough to be tired of being tired and edging on bored. I have lots to do, but not quite the brain power to do it just yet. So I’ve been rewatching Parks & Rec and Numb3rs and reading easy to digest fanfic. That is what has been going on with me! (Thanks for hanging in on these long posts).

How are all of you? Tell me something about what’s up with you!
dodger_sister: (hurt!winchesters)
...here’s what’s been going on with me. I had surgery the day before Thanksgiving. Let’s rewind to the beginning of summer, when my left leg started bothering me, my hip constantly feeling like it needed to be uncramped. I remember how rough on my leg the trip to the zoo with the Canadians was in July, spending the whole day in the wheelchair. By the end of August I realized I needed to see my dr. If it was the hip joint, better to find out sooner than later. If it was the tendon that often tightens on that side, then I needed a PT script to work it out. I was guessing tendon. I was wrong.

Wait...let’s go back to 1997, when I was 19. I had both my hips replaced because the cartilage in my hips had completely eroded due to years of arthritis. (Side note: all the cartilage is now gone from my knee joints, hence why they’re completely locked up & most from my shoulders, which my PT is helping me keep from locking up). They told me at the time that 15-20 years is good for a false hip joint to last before it needs replacing. But they expected that I would get 20-25, because I’m so tiny, young & not putting excess strain on the new joint by say, taking up karate.

I was in the waiting room at the doctor’s when I saw the news on my phone that Stan Lee had died. I started crying before I could get any words out. It felt like my heart was shattering right there. I haven’t felt that way quite so hard since we lost MCA of the Beastie Boys - another man who, like Stan Lee, helped shaped my formative years.

Look, I know Stan was 95, but guys, he seemed timeless to me. He’d been old since I was a kid, but he was always full of life & wit & wisdom. He changed lives with his stories. He changed *my* life. He changed the world. He got the best of life and he made the most of it and brought so much to the world. I'm so sad for our loss. For the world’s loss.

I honestly feel like a family member has died. Stan Lee was a part of my life since I was seven years old and began getting a subscription to a Spiderman series in the mail. That’s 33 years of his stories, his spirit, his words, having an influence and impact on me. So you’ll understand when I say I have to go and mourn, because my Grandpa Stan just died.

I’m sad to lose him, but glad to have had him. RIP, Stan Lee.
