Dismal Halloween this year. So cold, like 35F, windy af, wet. And then halfway through trick-or-treats, around 7, it started snowing. Ugh. Last year we had 150-200 kids. This year was 15-20 kids. And for some reason Sis bought a bag of candy where half continued nuts - which isn’t a good idea anyways since something like 40% of kids these days have nut allergies - but I hate things with nuts in them (I like nuts, I hate biting into something & having pieces of something else inside, idk, I’m weird about it) & Sis is watching her sugar intake, so like half the giant bag of candy ended up going into her office even though everyone there was like, “No don’t bring candy into the office,” a policy I think Sis actually started! Anyways I sat in the big picture windows in my outfit, but only one person noticed and it was a dad, though at least he thought I looked cool. Bummer night.

Though my costume was sweet!

But...the weekend before Sis, BFF & I had taken The Niece to her first convention! (Her brother is mad she got to a con before he did, even though his first con will be a comic con and this was just a family Halloween convention, there were lots of cosplayers there though). There was a Killer Car Show, which I was psyched about. There was free candy at every booth almost, which TN was psyched about. I ran into an awesome cool vendor I met this summer at the Festival of Oddities (you may need pics from that at some point to fully understand the crowd and the fare at something called Fesival of Oddities). I may be nursing a small crush on her, plus her art is amazing. The League of Justice cosplayers were there, a charity group that cosplays at events & runs to raise money for various things, and does children’s hospital visits etc. Their Joker let the children kill him over and over and was just as dramatic about it as Joker would be. Though TN was way more blown away that she met Poison Ivy and then Ivy saw her later and called her by name, “Hi, Jojo!” and waved as she walked past. No, that’s not TN’s name but the night before we took her to Target and she got a JoJo Siwa costume, some kids’ popstar I’ve never heard of. But a couple other kids there noticed her costume and shouted, “She’s Jojo Siwa!” and TN was maybe the proudest she’s ever been in her life. “They might think I’m the real Jojo Siwa!” She made everyone call her Jojo all day. They also had a simulation of the Monsters Inc scare training room, that TN & Sis did together to practice scaring kids in their beds like the MInc characters. They had a recreation of the Greedo scene from Star Wars where you played Han Solo’s role...I am forbidden from showing you the video of Sis doing it. There was a magician that had all the kids gathered around his booth while he did tricks. There was a creature creator creating on the spot.

It was lots of fun. I dressed as a creepy little ghost girl with her creepy little doll, and this zombie lady, who was one of the heads for the zombie walk taking place the next day, literally, I mean literally, begged me to come back for the walk. “We need you and this costume tomorrow!” I mean, look at her makeup and outfit? I was honored someone with this skill level liked my outfit. I didn’t wanna kill her buzz by telling her we couldn’t come back because we had my uncle’s memorial the next day.

Pics of the Halloween con under the cut. )

Anyways, it was an all around fun Halloween convention. I heard about it on FB last year after the fact, so I’d been waiting all year for it. It was worth the wait and even better for taking TN. Hope your Halloweens had better weather than mine, or at least that you got to a fun convention!

Once again I have to thank Canadian Nephew for the use of his lightsaber for this photo. I mean, he didn’t *know* I was using it - I had just bought him this as his souvenir from my cruise, but then I was getting photos done on the cruise in front of the Star Wars backdrop & I thought, “I need a lightsaber! I’m borrowing CN’s that I haven’t even given him yet.” And I ripped that packaging open & borrowed his lightsaber. When I told him later why it wasn’t in the package, he yelled, “Hey! What the Heck!” HaLol

As always, fellow Rebels, May the Fourth be with you.

I have not even posted about it yet, but in April, just a few weeks ago, I got to go to Disney’s annual blowout Star Wars Celebration convention. It was pretty expensive for any autographs & photo ops, so aside from the group photo w my girls & Greg Grunberg, I selected just one person to meet. And it was Peter Mayhew, the original Chewbacca himself. And I am so glad I did. Because Peter Mayhew has passed away.

He had had a stroke or something, before, it seemed like. But he seemed so pleased to be there, goofing it up for the cameras, intently listening to his fans tell him what he & Chewbacca mean to them, messing around with the Chewie replica head they set out on his table. I hope he was glad to have gotten to participate in one last celebration of an icon. *I* am sure glad he was able to be there. It fulfilled a lifetime dream of mine, to meet him.

Star Wars was the beginning of a world of imagination & possibilities for me. It showed me the stars. It taught me loyalty & friendship & courage & hope. And at the center of that, drawing me in, was my first love, Chewbacca. I was gonna marry him, you know. I was five - I thought marriage would be holding his furry hand while we walked, laying on him like a warm fuzzy mattress & blankie all in one, and having him carry me around when my knees hurt. In hindsight, I think I had a pretty good grasp on what marriage should be. And to meet the man behind my Chewie? Well, that was truly amazing. It’s a bittersweet thing I’m feeling.

The stars will shine a little brighter tonight, now that Peter has joined Carrie in lighting up the galaxy. The one here and the one far, far away.

‪Ya’ll, look what [personal profile] ceitfianna sent me! My own Chewie, my first childhood crush. This guy is quite possibly as snuggly as the real deal. I love him!

What a surprise to get a package in the mail & find him inside! Now to decide, do I tuck him under my head for maximum squishiness, prop my arm around him for cuddles, or be the little spoon in the relationship while allowing him to support my back? Decisions, decisions.

Thanks, K, he’s the best & so are you!

My obligatory I Voted selfies! I usually don’t have one of these pics because I tend to vote absentee. But there was a clerical error/kerfuffle with both mine & Sis’ absentee ballots not coming for some reason, so by the time we got it sorted, it was too late. We ended up squeezing in our votes in-person between the drs & the dentist. Upside, I got a sticker this way and like, James Marsters (of Buffy the Vampire Slayer) is offering a personalized reply over on Twitter, to anyone who tweets their voting sticker selfie at him. I mean, I’ve met the man, that should be enough, but I don’t care, I’m tweeting my selfie at him anyways! Also, I could not have been representing the nerd & geek communities any harder, because I showed up to vote carrying my Rogue One bag and wearing my Jayne Cobb ‘Fighting Elves” shirt & my Gryffindor hat!

Sadly, I’m not wearing the hat here, you can’t see my bag, and you can’t tell that is my Fighting Elves shirt

A convo with one young adult I know who didn’t vote. )

Anyways, that was my Election Day ramble. Excuse me while I go see if James has gotten to my tweet yet!

So yesterday Sis & The BFF & I all went to the Detroit Institute of Arts to see a Star Wars costume exhibit. It was the real costumes from the real movies! The lightsabers in that one pic actually had buttons you could push to make them light up. And look how freaky the Emperor’s costume looks. There were more than costumes, it had lots of info & draft sketches of concept art - you see there is one of Darth Maul that is creepy af & later there are 2 different concepts for Chewbacca I took shots of. Speaking of Chewie, his costume was made of yak hair and it was so warm in there they had to put a cooling system inside the costume to keep him from getting heat stroke.

For Princess Leia’s original white costume, they wanted her to symbolize royalty & purity, but in an accessible way that made her ‘one of the people’ not ‘above the people’. There were a set of green robes that were Bail Organa’s in the prequels and I can see where they were making him look royal, but again not too far above the people. But then for Queen Amidala’s robes, they were suppose to be very regal and elegant and absolutely symbolize her position above the people. But they did start to soften her in the second movie - as she and Anakin fell in love, as he gained emotional intimacy with her - they wanted the audience to feel that intimacy as well. There were so many details on her outfits too, that you will never notice when it’s on screen, but that they put on her gowns anyways. (I’m not a fan of the prequels *at all*, but I do love the costuming for Queen Amidala). For Leia’s hair, they actually did that with her own hair, but it took 2 hours and any time it came undone, they had to halt filming. So when they did Queen Amidala’s hair in the prequels, they just went with a hair piece, lol. Also, I love the boots on Leia’s bikini outfit.

For the droids they just used spare metal trash, any found objects they could, but Lucas wanted each object to be something, not just there for show, but if you were to ask, “What’s this do?” you could get an answer - even if it was non-functional in reality, it was meant to be something on the droids. Also, BB8 is bigger than expected. And somewhere in there you can see the sand-people. Note how there is a costume for a male sand-person & one for a female sand-person. They put a lot of thought into each costume, and for these they worked on what would protect these creatures from the sand, sun & sandstorms, so the costumes were realistic for the setting. I tried to talk the girls into a photo of us all with Yoda, but they are spoil sports!

Pics under the cut! )

The exhibit had crazy lines - thank goodness we bought tickets ahead of time, but we still had to wait in several lines - but it only took us a half hour to get in and once inside, it didn’t feel crowded at all. It was all accessible and relaxing and a great nerdy afternoon with my girls!

A few of my favs from Motor City Comic Con 2018 thus far. Sis said, “I always knew Rey & Supergirl we’re friends!” Negan had the voice down pat, “Well shit, Rick, I’m having a damn good time!” Was surreal just chatting in line with Pennywise - everything except the boots was handmade by this cosplayer, count me impressed.

Just let Groot chill while engulfing our heads with his hands! Sweetums may have been the coolest one I saw all day!

And Michael Rosenbaum enthusiastically yelled, “OMG, you’re the shit!” when he saw that I was dressed as Kaylee from Firefly & had decorated my wheelchair with a stuffed Serenity and a bunch of plastic toy tools. That made my day!

See you nerds tomorrow for Day 2!

I haven’t had a chance to talk about my cruise, as I’ve been so busy getting The Book finished. So close, you guys! But a friend asked about it and I thought I’d share what I told her and elaborate a little on one of my favorite parts of the cruise - the people.

There were 4,000 guests and 1,500 staff onboard. That could have made for a pretty crowded and loud cruise. But it didn’t feel that way. Well, like some places - the main kid pool for sure - were overwhelming at times. And there was a movie screen always running by the pool - yes, you could be in the pool having a swim and watch a Disney movie at the same time! So on top of the noise of screaming, splashing kids, there was also a very loud movie playing. We sat a few times and watched some of the movies while we ate, but for the most part, we spent our pool time in the ‘adults only’ section. There was also the night before Star Wars Day, where the staff were telling everyone, supposedly covertly, that the captain had felt a disturbance in the Force and was sure something would be happening in the lobby at 10pm. So we went to see and woah, all 4,000 guests were there to see what it was about. The balconies for like four floors up had people packed along them. It turned out our ship was being taken over by The Empire and Darth Vader showed up and Empire banners were unfurled. The crowd went nuts when Darth Vader came out. It was like being at a rock concert. But even that didn’t feel crowded. In fact, the people really were some of the best parts of the cruise.

Just…everyone, everywhere, enjoying themselves and the happiness was radiating off of them. I suppose they thought the same thing about us.

I can barely contain myself for Saturday, you guys. Because…I am going on a cruise! Just me & Sis. No, no kids! Just 2 middle-aged nerds. It’s my first cruise. And it’s a doozy. A Disney Star Wars 7-night Caribbean cruise!

In case you don’t know what that entails, we start our first day setting sea and then doing a safety presentation followed by like 20 minutes of song & dance with all the Disney characters.

Under the cut for spaceage. )

And, of course, we got a room with a balcony over the ocean, so downtime will be wonderful too! Like I said, I can barely stand to wait! This vacation has been 2 years in the making - we decided on it a few months after Mom’s heart attack in Fall 2015, thinking we deserved a sister-vacation after several months dealing with so much stress. But between Mom’s health & unexpected financial things, we never quite made it. So now, here at last, we will be setting sail. Sister-vacation is a go!

So, at the end of June, The Nephew came to stay, so he could go to daycamp near where Sis works. She dropped off/picked up every day and in the evenings, I was on auntie-duty. We mostly watched The Flash together, as he is just getting into it. His daycamp was at the YMCA and was Extreme Sports Camp. They did some tightrope walking, swimming, rock climbing, various forms of dodgeball-ish games. And he learned to rollerblade. He loves it! Too bad he lives in the country and has no concrete. If they end up moving to town, I’m going to buy him a pair, first thing.

This week he came back for Wet & Wild camp, which is all water play. He was excited and hoping they’d get to rollerblade again, which they have. They also went swimming, played water-relay games and water balloon baseball. Today they went to the big aquatic center pool, that has slides and diving boards, plus a drop slide. We got online last night to look at pictures and he got pretty excited.

While he was here, we also played more on our D&D game, that he has been playing for a year now! And we introduced him to Dead Of Winter, that Geek Cousin turned us onto, which is a zombie survival game. You work as a team, but also have individual goals. You can search and fight zombies, but you always risk being bit and spreading the infection to others. There are a good 50 characters you can choose from. It’s a load of fun!

At Motor City Comic Con we went to a tabletop booth, where I told the guy about our campaign last year with all the kids and how the nephews sliced open the dragon’s belly and crawled inside to attack him from his bowels, and the dude was laughing and telling me, “You’ve got a great generation of gamers coming up there.” Then he sold us on a D&D style Star Wars game, that he thought The Nephew was the right age for. We had Canadian Brother - who I played D&D with as a kid - Sis, Geek Cousin, me and TN. Before this TN’d only ever played solo campaigns or with the younger kids. This time he got to play with the big boys! CBro decided to turn on this jerk character we were suppose to be getting info from and just kill him. Geek Cousin joined him, so I banned them to the back of the ship, as I was game-master. TN thought that was hysterical, but he was also fascinated in watching the various ways you could go outside campaign perimeters. We stopped once we escaped Jakku, but there was more to do, so we want to play the rest later. I had to explain to Sis that you keep your character throughout all the campaigns, for years sometimes, until they die. So, no, we couldn’t let someone else play CBro’s guy, we’d just have to say we dropped him off somewhere.

Anyway, if you were wondering how The Nephew's - and my own - summer is going, that’s just a taste. Wait until I tell you about The Canadians’ visit!

Because I have not had the time or energy to sit at my desktop computer and make a proper tribute graphic to Carrie Fisher, I went ahead and did a quick sketch on my IPad the other night while in bed. I am still learning with the new drawing pad app, as well as the Apple Pencil, but I have gotten a few of the kinks worked out. This is not my preferred style, but I conveyed what I was going for here, certainly.

There was something, many things, small wonders and light inside Carrie Fisher, much like The Force was inside of Princess Leia. And in this piece, The Force is in her, around her, and she is floating in it...for always now.

May The Force be with you, Princess. And may you be one with The Force, Carrie Fisher.

And may you rest in peace.

Carrie Fisher, October 21, 1956 - December 27, 2016
dodger_sister: (grief)
I was so busy over Christmas that I never got a chance to make one of my tribute graphics for George Michael. I can't believe we lost him. Yes, when I was a kid I listened to his music, but that wasn't what made him such an interesting and iconic person to me. It was the way he shaped gay culture and the way he was a pioneer in gay acceptance, because he fought back against the image that they forced upon him for so long. By being in the spotlight he felt like he had to conform or give up his dreams as a musician, and eventually he let all of that go and spoke out on the AIDS crisis and the stigma of AIDS and the gay man...and just in general, he was an amazing and very brave person and talented man.

Jump forward a few days after that, where I was still feeling bad about George Michael, and then we lose Carrie Fisher. Which I can't even wrap my head around. I am heartbroken. I am devastated. I have cried for this loss. I knew she was quite ll, but she had been doing so much better, I thought she was stable and out of the woods. And then she was just gone. The first woman I ever truly looked up to. Before Audrey Hepburn even, there was Princess Leia. Before She-Ra and Teela and April O'Neil and Ororo Monroe...there was Princess Leia. And then after that, there was Carrie Fisher. The more I learned about her and her struggles in life, and the way she fought back against them and against society's stigma of her mental illness and the societal culture of sexism, and just in general told the world to 'fuck it' when she didn't like what she heard, all the while dealing with her own demons and anxiety (something of which I know a thing or two about) - the more I found her to be the hero that she played in Princess Leia. I am sorry we have lost her. I'm sorry we won't get to see her reaction to the fascist presidency we are about to get. I am sorry we won't get to see her storyline finished in Star Wars. I am sorry we will miss out on so many more words of wisdom from our favorite space-mom.

As if all that wasn't bad enough, but the shock of losing her daughter sent Debbie Reynolds on her way as well. I feel so badly for that poor family and everything they have lost. And, because I am me, I have been worrying about Carrie's dog, Gary. It was his job and life to take the worry and stress away from her. But who will now take the worry and stress away from him? Hopefully her daughter will bring him comfort.

Rest In Peace, George Michael. Rest In Peace, Carrie Fisher. Rest In Peace, Debbie Reynolds.

So, we had The Niece and Nephew this weekend and The BFF came down to give them their Christmas presents. She spoils them, you know. Her nephews live in Australia, so she adopted our niblings years ago.

She got The Nephew - who is 10 ½ now - a remote control flying Millennium Falcon. IKR?! The ship itself is made from styrofoam, but it was still a big present for him. He got really good at flying it too. We let The Niece try flying it, but that was a mistake - she got it all the way up to the top of my bookcase and then knocked my Dr. Malcolm picture over and broke the frame. Oops. We also took it in my room to see what the lights looked like in the dark and we tried putting a Lego guy on top of it and it totally flew with him on there!

It was a way busy, but fun weekend. Basically on Saturday they went Christmas shopping with my sister and to see Moana and then got presents and had that epic Pony play. Afterwards The Nephew told me, “This was kind of like the best day.” Awww.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN, FRIENDS! Did you guys know that this year is the 50th anniversary of 'It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown'? It was released in 1966. My dad and I talked about it tonight and that was the year he graduated high school and turned 18. By the release date - October 27, 1966 - my dad was out of school and of legal drinking age. We watched it every year as kids and I still try to, even now. Here's the quote from Sally after she spends all night in the pumpkin patch with Linus and has nothing to show for it:

"You blockhead! You kept me up all night waiting for the Great Pumpkin, and all that came was a beagle! I didn't get a chance to go out for tricks or treats. And it was all your fault! I'll sue! What a fool I was! I could have had candy apples and gum and cookies and money and all sorts of things. But no! I had to listen to you, you blockhead. What a fool I was. Trick or treats come only once a year, and I missed it by sitting in a pumpkin patch with a blockhead. YOU OWE ME RESTITUTION!

My mom would recite that whole speech just to make my dad howl with laughter. ION, I was Ballerina Batgirl for Halloween and Sis was Darth Vader with her R2Dog droid and friends came over and we had pizza and looked at all the cute trick or treaters in their costumes and it was a nice evening. One little bumblebee, no more than 2, couldn't have cared less about getting her candy, she just wanted to pet the dog. Winston was happy about that. When she went to leave, Sis yelled, "Goodbye," and the little girl yelled back, "Goodbye, Dog!"

Photos Under The Cut. )

I hope you all had wonderful evenings too! Tomorrow I'm posting my yearly Halloween fic - this year's is of The Monster Squad!
dodger_sister: (holiday 1)
So, if you’ve been following this journal for a year or more, you probably know that Halloween is a big deal to me and my sister. We started buying things to go in the yard as soon as we moved in together - a sound activated creepy bat/ghost/witch/light up eyes in the front bushes, giant spider and cobwebs, light up zombie/skeletons coming out of the ground, tombstones - we just go wild. Then we (along with The BFF) always dress as something scary and do a sort of Larping in the big front windows, acting out things to scare the kids who come to our door. We’ve gotten a bit of a reputation in the neighborhood and on a good year, we can get 150 kids. On our best year, we got approx 250.

But this year…we aren’t doing it. The tombstones fall over all the time from wind and rain and Sis just didn’t have it in her to set them back up over and over again all month. We didn’t have time to carve pumpkins. I even totally forgot to send out my traditional Halloween cards. Plus, Sis is on a new schedule of four 10hr work-days, to have Wednesdays off to take Mom and myself to appointments, so she won’t be home until 6:30, in costume until 7. And The BFF is working (yay for permanent job!) and can’t come to town on a weekday. I’m sad about the lack of Halloween around here.

But I am still dressing up! As Ballerina Batgirl! Which is basically just Batgirl, but in a yellow tutu and with glittery makeup. And I have two friends stopping over for dinner and to see my costume - they’ve joined us three years now, and they love to watch our zany Halloween antics. And when she gets home, Sis is putting on her Darth Vader outfit and Winston’s R2D2 outfit and taking him for a walk amongst the trick-or-treats, which will delight them.

At any rate, since I’m more comfortable posting photos here of myself, I thought I’d share some of my costumes from years past. The first year we did the Larping, we did zombies. We stood in the big front windows and acted like we were trying to get out of the house. Sis would throw herself against the window and growl. One little boy dressed as a soldier ‘killed’ her repeatedly with his toy gun. The next year we were Reapers and BFF and I stood in the windows and held very still. Many kids thought we were holograms. Until we started to turn our heads, very, very slowly. One girl, about 9, screamed and ran away at full speed. The next year it rained and BFF had the flu, so Sis and I took what were going to be Scary Witches and turned them into Good Witch outfits. Then the next year, we did Scary Witches. BFF brought a cauldron and fog machine and there was a lot of cackling. I sat in the rocking chair, positioned so you could see me once BFF opened the door to hand out the candy. I would start rocking very slowly once I knew I was in view and I got a lot of, “What is THAT?!” from the kids. The following year we were Steampunk Vampires. I sat in the front windows with my face in my baby doll’s stomach. Sis would signal me when to lift my head and I would and my mouth was covered in blood and guts and the kids would scream, “She’s eating her baby!”. Also K brought his then-tweenaged son over and wanted a picture of us and right before he clicked it, I turned and tried to rip the kid’s throat out with my vampire teeth. The look on his face clearly says, “I hate my dad’s friends.” Last year we went for Scary Fairies, though they turned out a bit more Victorian Fairy than anything. It was a slow year last year, so I just sat in the windows and sort of growled and screeched at kids.

This year I’ll just politely handout candy like any good ballerina superhero should!

So today is The Nephew's birthday! Number ten, can you believe it? Do you remember when he was four? I bet some of you do, because I started this journal on his fourth birthday. Yep, that means today is also...MY LIVEJOURNAL ANNIVERSARY! Number six, if you will. Six years ago today, The BFF, [livejournal.com profile] liptonrm, unveiled this journal to me as an early birthday gift and ta-da, here I am still! And hopefully for many years to come.

I've been with you guys for six years now and I know I am still pretty anon in some things - my name and my face - and that, in fact, going un-anon has always been a source of anxiety for me because it's giving away a piece of my control, somehow. But here on LJ I don't really feel like that anymore. I used too, but not so much these days. Because I know you all. Like here, now, my LJ has become my own little coffee shop where I know everyone by name and face and how's the kids and is your mom feeling better and how was that convention you went too?. So while some things may always remain anonymous - my name - and certainly some will forever - no, I'll never post photos of The Niece or Nephew, sorry, they're not my kids to do so - I think it is time to take a leap that my counselor and I have been working on and just jump...into posting a picture of myself beyond the age of five, okay!

Because this is my home and my geek-place and my friend-space and if I can't be comfortable with you lot, my people, my family, then where can I? And besides, there are pictures you need to see. Geek pictures. Nerd pictures. Fangirl pictures. From today, in fact. From Motor City Comic Con, in fact. Because, yes folks, I spent today, my sixth LJ anniversary at MOTOR CITY COMIC CON! Which was a coincidence, but it gave me a great idea for how to celebrate the anniversary day - by giving you some glamour shots!

So without further ado, may I present to you...ME!

Three pics under the cut! )

Thank you all for being on this journey with me, my friends! And here's to the next year to come!

As kids, we had our sandbox pushed up against the fence line in our backyard. We spent many days there playing with our Star Wars action figures, building Tatooine in the sand and burying our dead when they fell. Yes, we buried our dead. Sometimes so deep, we couldn't find them again. Poor Yoda, being as small as he was, had to be replaced at least three times because he'd get lost, never to be found again. And that happened at least once with R2D2, based on the fact that my little brother, now 33 years old, has been ripping up the old fence and laying in a new one for my dad and came across this gem, buried along the fence line.

But as The Force Awakens taught us, R2, you will awaken again when the time is right. Until then, know you served us well, in the summers of our youth.

I made it back from Chicago. You guys would not believe the weather we hit. I'll tell you about it later, but eventually we got there, had a great Galentine's, went to the planetarium today and are home now, unpacked and in bed with like 10 minutes left to Valentine's Day, so here is a little something for all of my lovely Flisties!

This is the Valentine's Day card I got from The Nephew! Look, look, it's Wicket! Awwww. This is too cute!
