I was just flipping back and forth between two TV shows - one was an SVU episode where the perp was played by Michael Trucco (you know him as Anders on BSG) and A Cinderella Story on ABC Family. This is a weird enough combination as is, but Trucco also played the uncle of Chad Michael Murray’s character on One Tree Hill - so the combo of watching him on SVU and then flipping to a movie starring Chad…look, if I had been stoned, I would have thought I was watching a really messed up episode of One Tree Hill, okay?

Anyways, I saw my grandpa today.

We try to go every Sunday and spend an hour visiting at the nursing home. Friday was Grandpa’s birthday (92 ya’ll!!) so we took him a card and a vid The Canadian-Brother emailed us of his kids telling Grandpa 'happy birthday'. He watched the video on my sister’s phone, then my grandma watched it and then Grandpa said, “Don’t put that away, I want to watch it again!”

Then he told us this story about being on the ship in the Navy during WWII. They had these young kids on board (“Oh yeah, they were definitely kids, these boys were.”) and how they wanted a dog but they knew they weren’t suppose to have one. So unbeknownst to anyone else, they grabbed a dog off the docks one day when they were in port. Once they were back out at sea, they hit a terrible storm and these young boys kept getting sick everywhere. So my grandpa tells them, "Stop thinking about it, you’ll get over it," and one of the guys says, “Can you tell that to our dog?” That’s how Grandpa found out they had a dog onboard.

He said that damn dog was terrible sea-sick and at their next port, the boys unloaded it onto the dock.

In other family news, The Nephew is awesome. He is really into Teen Titans right now (The BFF bought him season 1 & 2 for Christmas).

TN: Who is your favorite? My favorite is Beast Boy.
Me: I’m not sure I can pick, I like Robin and Raven.
TH: You could eeny-meeny-miny-mo it.

It’s his new answer to everything lately, you can just decide by eeny-meeny-miny-mo. I called him a few days ago and asked if he had watched anymore Teen Titans and he said, “Yes, I have all four now but I didn’t like the very last episode. It wasn’t very good.” He is a very opinionated 5 year old.

He also is really into Les Miserables the musical, which I know is weird for a kid his age. When I was 18 and The Little Brother was 13, we went to NY to visit The Canadian Brother (who I guess would have been The NY Brother then) and he took us to see our one and only Broadway play, Les Miserables. Now my little brother at the time was into hardcore punk like The Misfits, etc. But he got so into this musical, we both did. We listened to it obsessively and it is still my favorite musical to date. Anyways, he was never ashamed to be listening to it when his punk skater friends came over. He even got one of them really into the music from the play. He actually read Victor Hugo’s book at the age of 14, he loved the story so much.

I guess he is still really into it because now his kid is as well. The Nephew says to me the other day, while we are in the living room playing video games, “Hey, do you know who Gavroche is? I like his song,” and then proceeds to sing it for me - the whole thing. There were a few words he kind of slurred, either because he didn’t know the words or he was trying to imitate the accent...but this is serious business for a 5 year old to be singing, it’s not Raffi or whatever five year olds listen too these days. Then he says his other favorite song is “One Day More” and I said, “Yeah, but that’s hard to sing because there are so many people singing so many different parts,” and he says, “No, I just sing the one day more part,” but then he proceeds to start singing all of Jean Valjean & Enjolras, the revolution leader’s, lyrics.

I mean, seriously, who is this kid and how did he get so awesome? I was so impressed. If he wasn’t so shy about cameras, I would audio record it and upload the audio for you all. He is so damn cute, my Little Man.

If you don’t know Les Miserables and why it is impressive that he was singing these songs…I shall now give you video.

This is Gavroche and as my brother informed me when he went looking for a good clip to show The Nephew, who wanted to see what Gavroche looked like, he was apparently played at one time by Nick Jonas. You can all go look that up for yourselves, if you are so inclined.

This is One Day More, which is probably my favorite song of them all, although Do You Hear The People Sing holds a close second. I like the big ensemble numbers a lot. I get all goosebumpy. Once I saw a New Years Eve performance and after One Day More, ushers came down the aisle offering drinks and the cast came out on the stage and made a toast. It was midnight exactly during the intermission, it was really cool.

In final news, Tivo has recorded another bad SyFy movie starring Jason London for me, this one is called “Snow Beast”. It also has John Schneider. So that’s on for this week sometime in my viewing schedule. I know, I have a sickness, I can't stop watching bad SyFy movies.

Did you know, DID YOU KNOW?!?!?!!!!!

HUGH JACKMAN will be SINGING Jean ValJean in the Les Mis movie, forthcoming!

I could JUST. FREAKING. DIE.

DUDE. I KNOW. Like, OMG, I get shaking-excited everytime I think about it. It's like my wet dream come true. I mean, I have such a stupid ridiculous love for Les Mis and Hugh Jackman is just...there really isn't anyone as talented as him these days, he has that old film star quality to him and I just...I CAN'T WAIT.

My sister has the DVD of Hugh in Oklahoma and that was about all I could handle without exploding, this new Les Mis is gonna put me right over the edge.

(Thanks! Even though they often annoy me, my family is quite awesome).

There will not be a dry seat OR eye in the house, I swear. Old film-star quality is exactly right - plus a physique those guys could only DREAM of possessing. RAWR.

And now I think I must find and watch Hugh Jackman in Oklahoma....

I love Les Miz so much. My first introduction to it was at a summer camp where some friends convinced me to join them in singing "Do You Hear the People Sing" for the camp talent show. Les Miz and Newsies songs are what I sing when I'm happy and walking.

Also I've always enjoyed A Cinderella Story, it's such a sweet and fluffy movie.

Your nephew completely rocks by the way and makes me think of my nieces who are a few years older but very much themselves.

Do You Hear The People Sing is a great intro song to Les Mis, like if you want to convince someone that they should see this play or whatever, because it is so rousing.

Les Miz and Newsies songs are what I sing when I'm happy and walking.

Those are my top musicals too! (Along with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat). I always have soft spot for Oliver! because it was the first musical I saw (though my mother insists I saw Fiddler first, I don't remember it) and I love Dodger (obviously) but something about Les Mis and Newsies just draw me in. My brother was also obsessed with Newsies, I can't tell you how many times we watched that movie.

I actually own A Cinderella Story. My sister got me this DVD 3pack for my birthday called The Slumber Pack - it has ACS, Traveling Pants, and What A Girl wants. I think she bought it as a joke, because I had expresed interest in ACS and she was like, "Here you go, you 12 yr old girl". But then she highly enjoyed A Cinderella Story, in the end. I've always thought Hilary Duff makes good choices though. And well, I liked Chad in the football uniform, I am just that easy to please.

My nephew is seriously the coolest kid. I may be biased.

Yes, and I remember when there were excuses, I heard the whole soundtrack Newsies is just the best, I have it pretty much memorized and it makes me happy.

I think that kind of bias makes tons of sense because they're our nieces and nephews. I've been thinking about meeting up again at some point for watching movies as it was such fun last time.

Ha! Concidence. I was going to call you tomorrow and see if you wanted to pick a day for next week. I saw on your journal you had a ton of work days coming up this week but next week is good for me, as I am not in therapy atm. We can either watch 3:10 to Yuma or The Gilmore Girls, your pick.

This weekend or next week should work for me. During the week, I don't work on Wednesdays, so that's one possibility. Mondays, I don't work until 10 pm and that's online, all the other days have odd points and Saturdays are my best weekend days. Though a Friday might be possible as I work in the morning but I'm usually home by 1 pm.

If you're feeling up to it, we could do a mix. Yuma's not a terribly long movie and we could get in a few Gilmore Girls episodes. I could also bring over X-Men: First Class as I've been meaning to do a rewatch at some point and haven't yet.

From: [identity profile] dodger-sister.livejournal.com
Any of those days work for me, as I was figuring like 2pm to 7ish and then if you wanted to stay for dinner, we usually eat around 7, you'd be welcome too.

I have this urge when we watch Gilmore Girls to just mainline a bunch of it - Gilmore Girls is just one of those shows where I can watch a whole slew of episodes in a row and veg out. But I kind of want to watch 3:10 to Yuma (not the least of which so I can read your fic when you post stuff), so let's do that and XMFC and then next time we can do GG.

I'm the same way with it as well. Whenever I find a marathon on, I always lose hours to it. I might also bring my laptop this time so I can share some of the things I'm working on.

Would this Friday work? I always seem to lose my Fridays afternoons to doing nothing but vegging in company is far more fun.

From: [identity profile] dodger-sister.livejournal.com
Friday would be perfect actually. I have been a lazy git all week (I know therapy is good for me, but isn't lounging in my PJs good for me too?) so I should be well rested by Friday.

2-ish sound good to you?

Off to eat dinner now and watch Hoarders.

I've been lazy too at least with certain things. There's been writing but need to get myself in gear with job stuff.

2ish should work as I finish work on Fridays at noon, have lunch and get home after 1.

That gives me time to pick up DVDs and things and drive out. I'll bring Yuma and XMFC and there will be fic talking as that always helps me move works along.

Bad SyFy movies are better if you watch them with a crowd, or loads of alcohol! I was on the phone with my dad the other day and I said, "Hey dad, I am watching a bad SyFy movie right now with The Faceman from The A-Team in it," and he says, "Meteors are gonna destroy the earth? Yep, I'm watching it right now too." lol

My nephew is awesome and talented (I didn't even know he could sing!) ;)

I tend to watch them with my mum, the latter/earlier you watch the worse stuff, gets, but it's pretty entertaining. Still need to watch megashark v some other monster I can't remember, it looks so bad, but in a way that makes it really fun to watch lol

Date: 2012-01-24 11:09 pm (UTC)

It was Megashark vs some sort of crocodile, right? Seems like. I am really into the bad 'end of the world' movies for some reason. I mean I enjoy a good well-done 'end of the world' movie too but the really badly done ones are so much fun.

Oh yeah, bad horror can be fun too. I also like natural disaster movies. I will watch anything, no matter how bad - the new made-for-tv disaster films and the old stuff from the 70s, I love that crap.

The worst natural disaster movie I own is Night of the Twisters starring John Schneider and a young Devon Sawa. It is so cliched, I love it. Your mom should check it out.

Thanks, I'll keep an eye out for it. She's to blame for my twisted taste in films. I pretty much loath chick flicks and Rom Com's. Apparently my DVD collection looks like it should belong to a teenage boy.....a weird teenage boy lol

You'll probably have to rent Night of the Twisters, idk that they play it on TV anymore. But it's so worth it.

Apparently my DVD collection looks like it should belong to a teenage boy.....a weird teenage boy

Mine too! I have a ton of snarky low-brow comedies, action movies mostly about zombies and bad natural disaster films. I have a few other movies but honestly, I just watch the same three movies over and over again anyway - Deep Impact (your mom should watch that if she hasn't, it's amazing, it's actually quite good) Independence Day and Jurassic Park.

Date: 2012-01-25 04:18 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lizibabes.livejournal.com
I love all three of those films!! I was watching independence day yesterday, will smith punching an alien in the face, who doesn't like that?

My shelves are mainly full of horror(the old slashers I love, some remakes I tolerate) And then lots of stand up comedy

Have you seen Zombie land? Normaly I hate horror/comedy, but there is something about that one that works.

Date: 2012-01-26 03:30 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dodger-sister.livejournal.com
Whenever I get depressed or am sick and in need of comfort, I will do a run of my three fav movies - I call it "Jurassic Impact Day".

My favorite Independence Day moment is when the alien is inside the President's head and the general is all, "Is that glass bullet proof?" and Adam Baldwin (in uniform!) is all, "No, sir!" and whips out his gun and blows the alien away!

Yeah, I've rewatched that scene like porn, okay.

Have you seen Zombie land?

OMG, YES! I honestly think this is the best zombie movie ever made. It is fucking scary and hysterically funny and sweetly sad at the same time.

Have you ever seen the original black and white Night of the Living Dead? I am blown away by how ahead of its time it was. Also, you should watch the really campy cult classic of Return of the Living Dead, about a group of punk rockers who get drunk in a graveyard and then get attacked by zombies. My friends and I used to watch it over and over. Of course, we were stoned of our asses but still.

The worse sequal I have ever seen was a sequal to the original Texas chainsaw massacare.
It had the family traveling around killing people and using them to make chilli for chilli cook offs.
They make you graon, but bad horror and syfy are still so watchable lol

My Nephew rules everything!

The link for Gavroche's song here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fpTufcJuIU).

You should totally see Les Miserables! It is epic. You want to get out of your seat and shout, "Revolution!" and then like join the fight. Then you remember it is a play and you have to sit back down. ;)

It has a reformed convict fugitive, revolutionaries, stubborn hard-edge cops, love triangles, abused orphans, streetkids, pickpockets and corner whores. Sounds good, right?

I reccomend, if you ever get the chance, that you see it on stage, it's the ultimate experience. But also, there is a movie coming out (I think they start filming this summer) and it is the first time they have ever done a musical movie of it. They have made several movies of the book, but none of the musical. And this one stars Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean!! (watch the One Day More vid again, Jean Valjean is the guy who sings the first line).

I was actually just thinking about your Grandpa the other day, hoping all was well. Congratulations to him on making it to 92. That's dang impressive.

The Nephew continues to be a source of amusement that's for sure. I'm actually not surprised he knows all the song. We as older kids, adults, find something we like and memorize the shit out of it, little kids do the same thing. Except where we end up creepy fanboys, they're adorable little prodigys! lol

I saw Les Mis I think in elementary school on a field trip and remember being very impressed. I've never seen it as an adult though. The vids make me think I need to rectify that.

Grandpa has good days and bad days. He gets confused easier these days, but when he is awake and alert, he seems pretty good. My grandma has gotten him some large print books and I think reading even a little bit every day has helped a ton.

I didn't even know The Nephew could sing! I warp shape him into the ultimate fanboy as best I can but thank goodness his dad has remembered to get on the musical-love early.

Kids actually have an easier time with memorizing than we do, because they are still learning their language skills. You know the song at the beginning of Beauty and The Beast that is half in French? I had this girl at one of the daycares I worked at, she had just turned 3 years old and she could sing that whole damn song, even the french bits. It was amazing.

Elementary school? I am impressed because my school didn't even take field trips like that in high school. It was a crappy school.

Oh yes, if you get a chance to see it on stage as an adult, you definitely should! Also, the movie will be coming out next year, I think, with Hugh Jackman, so that'll rock. But nothing will beat seeing the play live.

It's good to hear your Grampa doing well. I believe I've heard if you can keep your brain active it's a very good thing as you age. So the reading probably does help a great deal.

Oh, I hadn't heard about a Les Mis movie. Hugh Jackman is practically a religious experience so it ought to be good.

I agree, there's nothing like a live performance. I'll keep an eye on my local theater company. It seems to me Les Mis comes through every couple of years or so.

The Nephew is the most adorable thing ever. I am so proud of what a cool kid he is turning out to be. I mean, he likes comics and video games and good tv shows and now, apparently, musicals!

She sounds awesome! I know, how are all these kids cooler than us? My cousin's 11yr old is learning to play the drums - I mean, how is he that cool? I remember when he wouldn't sleep in his own bed and now he is learning to play the drums because, in his words, "That's what the ladies like."
